What does a demi-season jacket mean?

The term “demi-season” can be heard in relation to any clothing and even car tires. What is the connection between the concepts, what does this mean?

The concept of the term demi-season

men's demi-seasonThis word came to us from France and literally translated means “the border of the seasons.” Therefore, demi-season clothing is a wardrobe for autumn or spring. Its main qualities will be waterproofness and protection from cold winds. Often such jackets are called “windbreakers”. Demi-season clothing does not have a warm lining, but it requires a dense outer layer. Materials for autumn-spring items can be:

  • Leather;
  • Leatherette;
  • Polyester;
  • Jeans;
  • Cotton with water-repellent impregnation;
  • Polyamide;
  • Drape;
  • Corduroy and any other fabric that can resist wind and rain.

Typical signs of a demi-season jacket

How to distinguish a jacket for the off-season from a winter or summer one?

signs of demi-seasonAs a rule, such an item is made of a fairly dense material, so it will be uncomfortable indoors, you will quickly sweat, while summer wardrobe items are well breathable and will not cause discomfort.

In demi-season outerwear, you can easily freeze in the cold season. It does not have many layers of filler (feather, padding polyester, down) that a winter jacket uses to warm you. It has a different purpose - to protect from wind and precipitation. These clothes are light and weigh very little. For better wind protection, the sleeves are trimmed with elastic bands or Velcro; there must be a hood and the ability to tighten the hem “so as not to blow.” The ideal jacket for the off-season should be easy to wash, repel water and dirt and be comfortable to wear.

Under what weather conditions are demi-season items appropriate?

As mentioned above, such a wardrobe is only suitable for cool weather. Wearing a demi-season jacket in winter, even over a warm jacket, is only permissible in regions with a mild climate. In addition to the fact that it will be cold, many fabrics, such as leatherette, cannot withstand frost, bursting along all the folds. As a result, the item instantly becomes unusable.

At the same time, in the Astrakhan region, Krasnodar region or Crimea, you can afford to spend almost the entire winter in demi-season clothes. The climate here is mild, sometimes frosts occur only at night. In other regions, with the onset of a steady cooling, such jackets should take their place in the closet until spring. They are being replaced by down jackets, sheepskin coats, fur coats and sheepskin coats that can protect against frost.
