The skin does not tolerate prolonged contact with water, but despite this, outer clothing must be washed. To maintain the shape and presentation of your favorite wardrobe item, approach cleaning with the utmost care.
How to wash a leather jacket at home?
Basic precautions:
- examine the label;
- before using the products, conduct a test on an inconspicuous area;
- do not rub the edges of the product against each other; for this purpose, use your hands or rags made of natural fabric;
- do not squeeze;
- dry strictly according to the rules.
Ideally, you should abandon the idea and trust the specialists.
Is it even possible to wash it yourself?
To answer this question you need to study the label. If the manufacturer has issued a strict ban on wet and dry washing at home, or the item is made of very expensive leather, then the idea of solving the problem yourself should be abandoned.
Should I use a washing machine and how?
You can only decide to do this if you have a very spacious washing machine at home with a lot of functions. The mode is set to the most gentle and delicate. Drying is either abandoned altogether or the minimum number of revolutions is chosen.
The temperature is set low. For example, 30 degrees.
It is worth remembering that many stains that are often found on outerwear cannot be washed at all at the specified temperature. Therefore, using a machine is not a very good idea from the very beginning. The benefits are minimal and the risks are too high.
Hand wash - subtleties
This option is preferable to machine washing. It allows you to control the process. If something goes wrong, you will be able to quickly find your bearings and stop spoiling an expensive item. For partial washing, you will need a hanger, rags and a weak soap solution (prepare it based on glycerin or baby soap). The trigger is cleaned on a hanger. Start with the largest contaminants. Work on small spots is done last.
If partial cleaning does not correct the situation, fill the bathtub with soapy water and place the item of clothing in it for a short time (do not forget to distribute the item evenly over the entire bottom). Then use your hands to rub the problem areas. Take out the clothes, rinse them (very thoroughly) and dry them.
Differences in washing methods for light and dark leather
The first option requires a more careful approach. Instead of soda and alcohol, it is better to use milk or lemon juice (one or the other, not all at once). Soak a cloth in the product and wipe the stain. If the jacket is white, perform manipulations with extreme caution.
How to clean the lining, cuffs, collar?
To a greater extent, they get dirty not due to contact with the environment, but due to constant contact with open areas of the owner’s body. Skin secretions can penetrate deeply into the material. Because of this, problem areas are difficult to wash. Stains and stains often do not disappear after washing the entire jacket. To get rid of them, wash the lining, cuffs and collar separately.
Ways to combat pollution:
- Remove the lining from the jacket. Wash. Sew it back.
- Turn the item of clothing inside out and hang it on a hanger. Treat the problem area with soapy water. Rub the stain lightly (use a soft, colorless cloth). If it does not disappear, apply a paste of soda (this option is only relevant for light-colored products) or a mixture of vinegar and ammonia. Rub using a blotting motion. Remove moisture with a towel. Leave the jacket alone until completely dry.
Attention! Drying must take place under certain conditions. They are described in more detail below.
How to remove stains using traditional methods?
Select a product based on the type of contamination. Don't forget to do a preliminary test on a hidden area of the jacket.
Dirt
Street dust can be removed with a rag soaked in plain water.
Fat
Such stains eat deep and react poorly to soapy water. You can get rid of them by using a good colorless dishwashing detergent. It is applied undiluted to the problem area. Then wait 20 minutes. This is necessary, since the active substances need time to dissolve the fat. Final step: blotting the jacket with a damp soft rag.
Old stains are removed using a different method.It requires a concentrated soap solution and ammonia. The dosage of the latter is determined by the formula: 5–7 drops per 0.5 liter of water.
Ink
They are removed with a swab soaked in medical alcohol. Try to avoid spreading.
Dye
Do not use nail polish removers containing acetone. It needs to be applied precisely.
Salt
Mix castor oil and fish oil in a ratio of 1:3. Evaporate the mixture in a water bath. Apply to the problem area.
How to update a leather jacket?
If the problem lies in unpleasant odors, then you can try using a steam bath with vinegar. To prepare it, fill a bathtub with hot water and add a glass of vinegar (not essence) to it. The product itself will need to be turned inside out, put on hangers and hung on a hook in the bathroom. In this state and with the door closed, the jacket should hang for about 2 hours.
Note! Leather items are not placed next to the heated towel rail. The combination of hot steam, high humidity and heat from the battery can turn even a high-quality item into a shapeless heap.
Another way to get rid of unpleasant odors: use orange peels. They are used to precisely rub problem areas (for example, areas under the armpits or cuffs). You need to drive with the orange side, without pressing hard.
Attention! Crusts can stain clothing. Therefore, after each movement, check to see if orange streaks have appeared.
Some people prefer to combat the phenomenon by spraying water infused with citrus peels. The liquid is applied inside out using a spray bottle. In this case, you need to know when to stop. Otherwise, you will have to dry the jacket for a long time.
Over time, leather wardrobe items not only accumulate outdoor odors, but also lose their brightness and elasticity. The listed properties can be returned. For this purpose, they resort to glycerin and castor oil.
Add shine
Light the candle. Mix the resulting wax with paraffin. Wait until the mixture thickens. Apply a thin layer. Wait a few minutes. Remove the product and polish the leather.
Make skin soft
Apply glycerin. Give it time to absorb. Remove excess with a towel. Good results are also achieved through specialized impregnations.
Washing a faux leather jacket
Place the leatherette in a basin. Fill it with soap solution (30 degrees). Wait a few minutes. Rub the greasy areas with a sponge. Change the water. Rinse. Dry the item as you would dry clothes made of genuine leather.
How to dry your skin correctly?
Leather clothes must be dried without fail. Even if only a small stain was washed out. Algorithm of actions:
- spread the jacket over the dryer and leave it in this position until large and frequent drops stop flowing;
- Fill the sleeves evenly with towels (unevenness may cause wrinkles to appear);
- fasten;
- transfer the jacket to a dense and absorbent fabric;
- as the fabric gets wet, change it to dry;
- After drying, hang the product on hangers;
- spray or rub with a specialized leather care product.
On a note! The jacket should dry naturally. Do not place it near heating devices, spray it with a stream of hot air or iron it.
Jacket leather care
Key notes:
- Do not forcefully rub the stain on your jacket. This is fraught with wear or cracks.
- Take your choice of hangers seriously. The hanger must be the right size. Thin, easily bendable products are also not suitable, since under the weight of the jacket they simply stretch out, change shape and cease to fulfill their direct duty. This, in turn, negatively affects things.
- After using folk remedies, marks often remain on fair skin. For example, it is not recommended to use orange peels.
- Do not put things on directly after washing. You shouldn’t do this with clothes that are almost dry. You should wait until it dries completely. Otherwise the jacket will lose its shape. Warping or folds may appear.
- Before wet cleaning the lining, the item is turned inside out.
- If you get caught in the rain or sleet, do not forget to wipe the jacket with a soft, colorless cloth made from natural materials. There is no point in putting off the event; it is better to start it immediately upon returning home.
- Treat the product with moisture-repellent impregnations and specialized care products at least twice a year.
- Follow the directions on the label. Remember that universal care rules do not take into account the characteristics of a particular material. Peccary requires a completely different approach than calfskin.
- It is very important to observe operating temperature conditions. If the item is designed to be worn in the off-season, then in the cold it may crack. Insulated models quickly fade in the bright sun. During their creation, technologies that increase the level of protection from exposure to rays are simply not used.
- Do not store or dry jackets near heat sources or in areas with high humidity.
Also you should be careful when choosing care products. Be sure to test before using as directed. This must be done even if the packaging of the cream says that it goes perfectly with leather clothing of a certain color and texture. The test is carried out on the inside of the sleeve or collar. It is impossible to say unequivocally which place is more suitable. Here you should rely on the style of the product. When choosing a site, be guided by the fact that traces of unsuccessful testing should not be obvious.
The rule also applies to homemade products. Especially if you have no experience in creating or using it. In this case, you should wait several hours from the moment the test is performed. After this time, it will become clear whether the care composition was prepared correctly and whether it is suitable for a particular jacket.
