Socks are an integral part of our wardrobe. Woolen, camel hair, with the addition of bamboo - the choice is varied. But do you know who invented them?
History of socks
Initially, the ancestor of this underwear was intended exclusively for women. It was also worn by the inhabitants of Greek Hellas, using it as house shoes. The leather sock looked like a modern boot without a sole.
Reference! These shoes were very comfortable, and soon men began to wear them too. But only at home, because the ancient ancestors of socks were women's shoes! This is how they ended up in the theater, where in Ancient Greece only men could perform on stage.
Greek merchants often traded with the Romans. This is how homemade leather shoes called soccus appeared in Rome. (lat.)
After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Great Migration began. Crowds of millions of Romans headed to different ends of the continent.
Where they came, there lived warlike peoples - Franks, Germans, etc. They liked the shoes brought by the Romans. The warriors began to wear them first, and then heavy hiking boots.
Time passed and peoples organized themselves into countries. The Latin word “sock” was transformed into the familiar and well-known word – sock. By the 14th century they began to be knitted from cotton, increased in length and were excluded from the list of underwear. Long socks at the French and English courts were part of the outerwear of not only dukes and barons, but also kings!
In the 18th century, women began to wear stockings again. This happened thanks to Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, the favorite of the French king Louis XV. After all, France was a trendsetter for the whole world even then!
When the First World War began, men's trousers became longer due to their owners being at the front, while women's skirts, on the contrary, became shorter in order to save money. In this regard, long stockings became an item of women's clothing, and the long-known socks began to be worn by men.
Reference! At the beginning of the last century, synthetics were not added to the composition of these products, socks were not removed from the feet thanks to ties, and later suspenders!

Tips for choosing socks
Men wear this item of clothing more often than women. Therefore, they are able to either show that a man has style, or play a cruel joke on him.
To look elegant, remember 3 simple rules:
- The color of socks should not differ from the color of pants and shoes.
- Give preference to products that in a sitting position will not expose the leg.
- The main rule – maximum use of natural materials (70–80%). This composition of the item will not harm the legs and will allow them to “breathe” and not sweat.
Reference! It is interesting that in modern Britain, men, when putting on a formal suit made of plain fabric, specifically choose socks with a bright and original print. This is how the British want to attract attention and show themselves as real fashionistas!
Even such a small wardrobe detail as socks needs to be approached responsibly. Choose the style, color, material you need and feel comfortable and confident!
