Socks are a wardrobe detail that is usually not noticed, and therefore not given much importance. However, experience suggests that for the integrity of the picture, all details must be carefully selected. It’s the same with socks - you don’t notice them until everything is put together correctly. As soon as any thing “strays from the general ensemble,” the whole ensemble falls apart.
To avoid awkward situations, pay more attention to details of clothing that are not visible at first glance, but are no less important than a suit or trousers. The first step in this is the perfect fit, for which you must purchase socks strictly in size.
How to find out and determine your sock size?
Items from the hosiery group cannot be tried on before purchasing in a store. This creates certain difficulties, as it leads to errors in purchasing goods. If you choose socks that are shorter than required, you are guaranteed to constantly have them slipping and twisting.Excess volume around the ankle will create unsightly folds, and as you know, it is better to have a hundred wrinkles on your face than one on a stocking (in this case, a sock).
The most important criterion when choosing socks is their size. Without knowing which one you need, take the shoe size, foot length or insole as a guide. These parameters are measured in cm using sewing tape or a simple school ruler.
How to measure your feet correctly?
- Take a sheet of paper and a pencil (pen, felt-tip pen);
- Let's put some paper on the floor and put our bare foot on it;
- draw a contour around the leg, leaving no allowance;
- Using a ruler, measure the distance from the extreme point of the heel to the end of the big toe.
Measure the length of the second foot in the same way. Compare the two numbers you receive and make a choice in favor of the greater of them. This will be the desired foot length, which is decisive for determining the size of the socks.
How to measure the insole correctly?
- We remove the insole from shoes that are worn every day;
- apply it to a sheet of paper and trace it along the contour;
- measure the distance between the extreme points on both sides.
Different materials and manufacturers: how do sock sizes differ?
The fit of hosiery on the leg can vary. In this case, not only the number matters, but also the composition of the raw materials used, the molding conditions and the density of the thread. Cotton, wool, and silk are usually used to produce men's socks.
Synthetic additives to the main fiber are used against stretching, to maintain shape, perfect fit and add strength. Products made from pure cotton or fine wool are considered the highest quality. Pairs made from mercerized cotton (processed in a special way to achieve a silky sheen and thread strength) are also good.Such things cost more than others, but in operation they will be better and more durable than others.
If the composition contains a mixture of natural and synthetic fibers (the addition of synthetics is allowed up to 30%, but no more), then even with a small error in measurements, the sock will fit very well on the foot and easily repeat the anatomical shape of the leg. If the thread contains only natural fibers and the knitting texture is very dense, it is important to accurately determine the desired number. This sock is inelastic and will make it difficult to fit your foot. It is important not to make a mistake here, because after washing a cotton sock can shrink and take on a smaller shape.
It is better to choose socks for summer from pure cotton. They are guaranteed to go well with stylish shoes and a light suit. For colder seasons, you should choose woolen products: they will protect against low temperatures without disrupting thermoregulation.
It’s better not to choose synthetics at all: increased sweating, unpleasant odor, possible allergic reactions will not benefit anyone. There is only one exception in this case - a small percentage of the addition of synthetic thread to natural raw materials increases the service life of the product and affects the fit.
The simplest thing is to settle on one brand and, after purchasing a trial pair, buy only this product. You can buy products from several companies, and compare, choose the one that is most suitable for you:
- Corgi, Scott Nichol, Pantherella, Turnbull & Asser are favorite brands of fashionistas. Companies in Italy and England produce the best, highest quality socks. They are also the most expensive.
- AVANI (Russian Federation) - produces cotton socks with the addition of synthetics to give elasticity. In the abrasion zone there is a double thread.
- Cat – reinforced heel and toe, special anti-sweat composition, protection against rubbing calluses, good stretch.
- AVI-outdoor (Finland) – seamless technology, for low sub-zero temperatures, raw materials – merino wool, elastane.
- Giulia – cotton with polyamide and elastane, double sided, soft elastic.
Are shoes and socks the same sizes?
It would be great if the numbers in the shoe size range and the length of the socks matched. But the situation is different: shoes have one size, socks have another. For example, for men's shoes marked 41, size 27 socks are selected, and for women's 39, we take size 25 half-knee socks.
Sock size chart
We suggest using tables to determine the correct number of socks, which contain information about foot length, shoe sizes and hosiery sizes. They often provide information about European sizes. For convenience, the tables are divided by gender.
For men
Domestic manufacturers use a size chart with odd numbers - 23, 25, 27 - with an interval of 2 cm. Socks for a man are a very important accessory. The correct fit on the leg will be ensured by the correct choice of fabric composition and product size.
For women
Ladies also need to know their correct number. This will save you in the future from buying small or large socks that twist and slide down.
For children
If for adults the interval of the size range is a couple of cm, then for children it is 1 cm. The table gives the values of even and odd sizes, because it is not always possible to find the right one on sale. For a child, it is better to choose a slightly larger size.
Tips for using the chart and choosing socks
Determine the size of socks you need based on your shoes:
- find the column with shoe sizes in the table;
- choose your number;
- look for the column with sock sizes;
- From the shoe size, visually draw a straight line until it intersects with the hosiery sizes. This is exactly the number that indicates the size you are looking for.
Proceed in the same way when determining the size of your socks based on the length of your foot.
For children's products, a column with the approximate age of the child is additionally given. If you are going to buy a pair you like as a gift and don’t know the size of your godson, the table will help you. If in doubt, choose a longer length, because children grow quickly, and beautiful and durable socks will wait in the wings and will always come in handy.
Some tips for choosing the right pair
- Buy quality products. Choose brands you trust, look at the ingredients, compare the requested price with it. If a manufacturer charges too low a price for a pair, this means the product uses low-quality raw materials. Such socks tend to quickly wear out on the soles, fade when washed, and stain the feet. They will slide all the time, forming folds.
- When purchasing, carefully inspect the product - The seams should be in perfect condition, the elastic should stretch evenly. Make sure there are no protruding threads, abrasions, holes or other defects.
- If you bought socks and, after trying them on, made sure they fit perfectly, take the time to go to the same store and buy 1-2 more pairs of the same ones. This will subsequently save time searching for a suitable option for purchase, will allow you to quickly find them in the morning (you can take them from different pairs) and painlessly replace the frayed sock from the kit with another one.
- By taking a photo of the label of the product you like on your phone, you can use the hint to select this manufacturer and this size of socks.
