The world learned what a stole is in the 18th century, with the help of Isabella Palatine, aka the Duchess of Bavaria. This beautiful lady was the first to invent and introduce into fashion wide shoulder capes made of sable fur.
Noble ladies of that time wore dresses that exposed their bust and delicate arms as much as possible. The Duchess wrapped herself in a fur cape to protect herself from the cold. This idea with a stole was positively assessed by the ladies of the court and added to their wardrobes.
From year to year, the appearance of the stole has transformed. The shape, size of the canvas and material changed, the color palette and scope of use expanded. Later, capes began to be made not only from fur, but from various fabrics - wool, velvet and satin, complemented with handmade embroidery, lace and precious stones.
The original heating function has lost its relevance over the years. Today, a stole is a universal accessory, loved by women of all ages, which is used to create everyday and evening looks.
Differences from a scarf
Many people confuse and call the scarf a stole; they are right and wrong at the same time.
There are some differences between these two products:
- Width. A stole is a rectangular product and its smaller side cannot be less than 700 mm, and a scarf can be very long and narrow, from 10 cm wide.
- Possibility of use as a headdress (tie it with a scarf, make a turban or throw it on like a hood).
- Imitate other types of clothing. A stole tied in a special way can replace a vest, bolero, dress and even a skirt.
