The prototype of the modern coat appeared in Spain in the 17th century. At that time, a cloak with a simple cut hood was famous among the local peasants. Around the same time, such a cloak was worn by palace servants in Holland, and by soldiers in France.

I consider the “great-grandfather” of the classic straight-cut men's coat to be the redingote, which appeared in the 18th century. It had long (to the wrist) sleeves, lapels, a collar and slit hems. In addition, it was fastened in front with buttons and was used in the cold season.Men of that time appreciated this comfortable and warm outerwear, and the riding coat quickly turned from an attribute of riding into a part of everyday wardrobe.

In the 19th century, a new entertainment became fashionable among European aristocrats: they ordered individual coat designs. It must be said that fashionistas of that time did not suffer from a lack of imagination, and therefore there were more and more new styles of this outerwear.

In addition, the coat has always been present in army equipment. For example, for many years the traditional outerwear of the ground forces has been a single-breasted coat, while that of the navy has been a double-breasted coat. Soldiers actively wore it until the mid-twentieth century. It was only in the 50s that it was recognized as impractical for the army. However, in our country with its harsh climate, military personnel still wear this outerwear, but not all the time, but in some cases.

1. The duffle coat is a straight-fit model with hinged buttonholes and a checkered lining.
2. Chesterfield is an interesting fitted option with a fur collar and a hidden clasp. Its distinctive feature is four pockets, two located on each side (one above the other).
3. The pea coat is a model that came from the orderly ranks of the army. This is a short coat with a warm lining and a turn-down collar.

11. A short coat is a kind of jacket version, but in a more formal design. The length of this model usually reaches mid-thigh.
12. An overcoat is a coat with a stand-up collar, epaulettes on the shoulders and inconspicuous but large buttons. It is strict, most often dark.

The coat is often decorated with individual details, such as rhinestones, fur, leather inserts, buckles or a belt. But even in the classic version, without additional elements, it looks flawless.
