Drape and what it is like: what it is, how to choose, description, photo

Cape (from S.I. Ozhegov’s dictionary) is a shoulder cape, the length of which is most often above the waist. From French it is translated as “wanderer”, from Latin – “foreigner”.

Today's fashion designers have different opinions on this matter and present the meaning of this word in various interpretations, namely:

  • an extensive collar in the form of a ring, as most often it envelops a coat or dress;
  • an elongated circular cape that reaches the lower back, which can be used as a coat;
  • a shortened cloak with a cap, most often preferred by women.

The history of this item dates back to the 13th century and in those days it was an elongated cape without sleeves. During the revival period it was changed and made short, during the reign of Russia a sable tail was added, and already in the Soviet Union the slits for the hands were improved.

But this cape reached its peak of popularity in 1841 after the production of the play “Giselle” under the command of the French musician Adolphe Adam in his homeland.After some time, this production was organized in the Russian state in a theater called the Grand Opera. The heroine of this play appeared on stage in a cape made of ermine fur, after seeing which most women began to beg for the same from their men and they had to provide their loved ones with this thing for 20 years.

Later, the cape began to be used as an addition to uniforms, which were made for interns at the Institute of Noble Maidens. Later, ordinary villagers began to wear it.

In the modern world, the cape is usually classified as a luxurious detail of high society, so it is not possible to see it somewhere on the subway or bus. A natural cape is sewn from the fur of rare animals: foxes, arctic foxes, sables, martens, minks, and silk and precious stones are used as an addition. That is why it is used as the top part of an outfit when visiting theaters, concerts, restaurants, etc., and also as the main accessory for a bride.

Another popular cape option is a waist-length bolero jacket made from various materials. In many cases it is found in white, black, beige tones and is combined with straight-cut trousers or jeans.

The traditional way to wear a cape is to wear it over a dress, or under a black jacket or coat.
