Therefore, when choosing a material, you should not save, as high-quality fabrics will last longer.

Selection of model and materials

Before you start working on creating a shirt, you need to decide how it will be used. For example, if this is an everyday item for the winter, then it is better to take fabrics that retain heat better. For example, a biker jacket or flannel. And if you plan to wear it in the summer, then the main material for the nightgown should be light and comfortable: chintz, calico, silk or another.

Reference! Calico nightgowns have a delicate and fine texture, are pleasant to the touch, and the material itself is a breathable cotton type of fabric.

There are a huge variety of styles for a nightgown:

  • Doll or baby doll. A product related to erotic lingerie with a deep neckline and lace.
  • Slip shirt. The distinctive feature of the product is the length slightly above the knee and short sleeves, like a T-shirt.
  • High waisted. It helps perfectly to hide figure flaws and emphasizes the chest.

Modern design solutions allow you to create stylish chintz shirts, choosing elegant models of silk shirts as a basis. Nightgown pattern

Experienced needlewomen can take the necessary measurements directly on a piece of fabric, but for beginners it is best to use a pattern. Its construction for the nightgown is a fundamental part. Since the chosen style has a loose fit, and the cut-off bodice is connected to the skirt with a seam, this allows you to create a universal item that can be worn at any size.

Making a pattern is quite an interesting process. To make it you need to take a few simple measurements:

  • chest girth;
  • length of the product;
  • hip girth.

All these measurements will be required to ensure that the future shirt fits your figure freely and does not restrict movement. In addition, if you add lace to the model, you will get a very bright night outfit.

Scheme of the finished pattern:

Nightgown pattern

The basis of this scheme is the basic dress pattern, which allows you to create various products. However, you can build it differently, based on personal parameters. The chest side dart in diagram 1 on the bodice closes, revealing the waist dart, but on the base of the dress it is not taken into account.

In the diagrams, the pattern is presented in half size, in order to make it more convenient to cut out the material. Therefore, the width of the back and front parts is equal to 1/2 of the actual volume + 3–4 centimeters for freedom of fit.

Cutting fabric

Fold a piece of material in half along the grain thread and place the pattern on it. Then pin it with pins or outline it with chalk.It is worth cutting the fabric taking into account a 1 centimeter indentation from the lines - this is an allowance for future seams. All parts should be cut out separately, and the undercut on the chest piece will need to be sewn without cutting out the dotted lines.

Important! The top and bottom of the bodice along the back, as well as the bottom along the front, are fitted with elastic.

Also, 2 straps should be made from the main material. However, their length is best adjusted when trying on the finished product. The bottom of the nightgown can be edged with lace, and in order for the finished product to look harmonious, lace can also be placed on the straps. The selected model is made exclusively from basic chintz fabric, however, nothing prevents you from decorating it as you wish.

Sewing a shirt

After all the material has been cut according to the pattern, all the parts should be connected to each other.

Attention! The length of the product can be adjusted according to personal preference. You can always take a slightly larger piece of material or add lace to the hem of the nightgown - this will add elegance to the outfit.

The process of stitching the cut material is quite simple. If you have a sewing machine, it will not take much time, however, if you don’t have one, you can carefully sew everything by hand using a reverse stitch. The product must be assembled following certain steps:

  1. Sew darts on the chest.
  2. Along the skirt, fold the fabric 1.5 centimeters and sew the edge so that you can then insert an elastic band there.
  3. Similarly, sew the edge along the top of the bodice on the back and insert an elastic band into the edge.
  4. Sew the upper part of the bodice together at the side seams.
  5. Connect the nightgown skirt.
  6. Finish all edges of the product with bias tape or lace.

Thus, all the main elements of the nightgown are collected. The last stage of assembly is to baste the straps, try them on and sew them with the main seam at the required level. In addition, you can use the fasteners, like in a bra, and make the straps with the ability to adjust them.

As you can see, it’s quite easy to sew a chintz nightgown yourself. Such an interesting thing will surely last quite a long time and will delight you with its elegance.
