Material

Cotton capes, as well as satin, flannel and wool, look best on a dress. To create, you need a main fabric that will be used for the outer part, and a lighter shade for the inner side. You can choose one color scheme with a similar pattern or a more contrasting one to emphasize the brightness.

Reference. A fabric with a pattern is suitable for the outside, and a plain fabric for the inside. Cotton can be used on both sides due to its lightness.

Constructing a pattern

Ready-made patterns are provided by specialized magazines “Burda Moden”, “Atelier”, etc. But if you want to sew a product according to your own standards and do not have a ready-made pattern, you can make it yourself. This will also allow you to show your design skills: remove, add this or that element, decorate with frills, beads, etc.

Stages of work:

  • Measure the base of your neck. Divide the resulting number by two, then by Pi (equal to 3.14) - this way you will find out the radius of the neck. Take measurements of the required length of the cape (from the shoulder). If you want to get a robe, it can go down to your calves or ankles. If the cape should resemble a cape, consider the distance to the elbows or slightly below.

neck and cape length measurements

  • Fold the paper in half and again (crosswise). You should end up with a square. Place it so that the center point is in the upper right corner.
  • Draw a line for the neckline: Draw an arc from one corner to another at the distance of the resulting radius.

  • Draw a second arc at a distance of the desired length of the cape.

  • Allow 1-1.5 cm for seams and cut out the resulting pattern.

Cut on fabric

  • Take the resulting paper pattern.
  • Fold the fabric the same way you folded the paper: in half and in half again. The outside should be inside.
  • Attach the resulting pattern to the fabric and pin it with pins.
  • Cut the fabric into the required shape.
  • Repeat for the lining fabric.

Sewing steps

  • Lay out the fabric patterns for the outer and inner sides and place them on top of each other. Fold them in half together and you should get a semicircle. Cut both layers along one of the folds, leaving the other intact.
  • Place the fabric right side in. The layers must match in all sections. Pin both layers together.
  • If you want to make a cape with ribbons, then you will need lines about seventy-five centimeters long. Remove the pins from the top corners of the front cut. Stretch ribbons inside the slightly open corners. Align the edges of the outer pieces with the lining. The tapes should go between them. For greater accuracy, first hold the ends of the ribbons over the fire so that they do not fray. Wide ribbons that match the color of the cape look best.
  • Make a stitch on the sewing machine around the perimeter, making allowance is about 1-1.5 centimeters.
  • Trim excess fabric from corners. Make notches along the neckline at the seam allowances so that there is about two and a half centimeters between them. Along the bottom edge, the distance can be up to five centimeters from each other.

  • Turn the cape right side out. Tuck the raw cuts inward and pin them together. Go over the cape with an iron.
  • The eversion hole must be sewn shut. You can stitch at a distance of two to three millimeters from the edge of the perimeter or stitch it manually with a blind stitch. Remove the pins.
  • Make a clasp for the cape: Sew on a hook, eyelet or buckle.
