Every woman has ever thought about sewing her own clothes. It’s so nice, and everything will definitely be true to size, in your favorite colors and made from natural fabric. But everything just stops at desire and ideas.
Many people think that it is very difficult and expensive. Let’s try to dispel these stereotypes, because sewing a simple dress without a pattern with your own hands is not an exorbitant dream, but a reality.
Necessary materials and tools for sewing
For comfortable sewing, you will need knitted fabric (if you need sleeves longer than 3/4, then you need a little more knitwear), threads to match the color and a special needle for knitwear.
Calculation of knitwear
The knitted fabric can stretch in 1-2 directions, is thin and drapes well.
With a fabric width of 1.5 m you will need: one bodice length + one selected skirt length (don’t forget 5-8 cm for allowances).
It’s better to first quickly sketch out a small drawing with the chosen style, then make a large-scale approximate pattern to estimate the amount of material on the fabric.
Important! If the width of the knitwear is 150 cm and does not fit the circumference of the hips, then you will have to take 2 lengths of the skirt!
Approximate pattern diagram
In order for the dress to fit like a glove, you need to measure the volume of the chest, waist and hips, as well as the width and length of the back, the full length of the sleeves, and of the dress itself. The volume of the sleeve is measured directly where the length ends.
The width of the back is measured not from behind, but from above, so that the end of the centimeter touches the shoulder. And the length of the back is measured from shoulder level to our waist.

Cut on fabric
You don’t have to make a pattern on paper, but work directly with the fabric.
We measure 4 cm from the top, set the starting point, slightly moving away from the edge. We mark the length of the back and draw it perpendicular to the waist line. From it we mark the length to the hip line. Now we divide the value of the back length by two and draw a line. Additionally, note the desired length of the dress. From the very original point, measure the length of the neck, approximately 9 centimeters, approximately 3 centimeters upward, connect these two points with an arc. Now you need to measure the required volumes.
Draw a slightly rounded line along the back to the hip line. Let's set aside all the necessary volumes, first dividing them into two and adding a couple of centimeters to be sure. At the very bottom we mark a point at the hip measurement level, but minus one and a half cm for narrowing, connecting the points together.
Important! From the very bottom to the hip girth point, be sure to connect with a ruler, the rest can be dotted by hand.
After that, from the chest line we mark the point of the width of the back and draw the shoulder line at a slightly inclined angle, from the length of the neck to the width of the shoulder. From this point we set aside the length of the sleeve. At the end we draw the circumference of the sleeve, always at a right angle. Next we draw the sleeve itself. Here you can show your imagination and make it wider or, conversely, narrower by connecting the end of the sleeve to the waist circumference point.
After that, connecting the fabric with pins, carefully cut out the pattern.
Important! The beauty of this pattern is that you don’t need to count anything else, all you have to do is transfer it to the fabric and sew it. On the fabric you need to add another 2 centimeters above the pattern, but only at the level of the neckline, then the lines should converge.
You can make a seam in the center of the front, to do this you will need to cut the fabric in half. This seam will add some flair to the dress. After you have swept away all the seams, try it on yourself to make sure all the calculations are perfect.
How to treat the neck?
Alternatively, beauty can be achieved using bias tape. This is a rather complicated process, but various master classes can be found on the Internet, in which all the pitfalls and possible difficulties will be explained to you in detail and clearly. The only downside is that you cannot miss or do something wrong, because you will have to rip it apart, and this can ruin the appearance.
How to decorate sleeves?
You can just leave them straight, but if you really want to, or suddenly the length of the fabric is not enough, then you can make cuffs or lace, Just choose ones that are not very catchy, then the dress will turn out a little ridiculous.
As you can see, sewing such a dress will not take much time and effort, but at the end you will get a comfortable dress that will fit your figure perfectly. And most importantly, it will be your own work, so every time you wear this dress, you will be proud of yourself!
