For every girl, prom is not only a certain stage of maturity, receiving a certificate and moving to a new “level,” but also an opportunity to preen itself and show oneself in all its glory. That is why today school proms are replete with revealing outfits and luxurious ball gowns. What was it like during the time of our mothers in the USSR? I am sure that the girls also wanted to look luxurious on this special day.
How they dressed for prom in the USSR
Previously, schoolgirls could not dress too brightly and flashily; this was fraught with long-term disputes with parents and school management. To get a strict and mature look, girls wore classic dresses in pastel shades, just above the knee length.
Important! During the Soviet era, dresses for young women did not have a variety of styles and colors, so almost all girls were dressed the same.
In big cities, it was considered fashionable to sew a dress to order from a professional tailor or on your own if the family did not have a lot of money. It was almost impossible to find a ready-made dress in stores.
My mother told me that girls whose parents could not afford to sew or buy a prom dress would come to the graduation ceremony in school uniforms with a white festive apron. It’s hard to imagine what it took for them to fit into that disgusting uniform when their classmates are sporting beautiful “adult” dresses.
In the 80s of the last century, the opportunity arose to be more liberated. Dresses with rather deep necklines were seen on store shelves. This gave grown women a real shock. And young students rushed to buy a new product for their graduation.
Yesterday's schoolgirls chose their shoes in accordance with fashion. Here everything was quite simple, since the stores also did not differ in the variety of models. The shoes were bought with the expectation that the schoolgirl would wear them not only to the prom, but also to subsequent admission to the university, student parties and family holidays.
How people dress for prom now
Modern proms are replete with a variety of chic evening dresses. Most schoolgirls prefer to rely on the images of show business stars and at the same time look as mature as possible. All of my mother’s cosmetics and my mother’s shoes are used.
Dresses come in a variety of styles:
- short evening (great not only for prom, but in the future will be useful as an outfit for going to the theater, for family holidays and other events);
- a long and fluffy ball gown (as a rule, such dresses are not practical and are worn once or twice in a lifetime);
- laconic cocktail (an excellent option, quite practical, since such an outfit can later be worn to various events).
Important! Some girls try to look very grown-up and prefer pantsuits and high-heeled shoes. This is a rather risqué look for prom, but quite attractive.
In addition to styles, modern graduates’ outfits differ in colors. In contrast to the light pastel colors of clothes from the times of the USSR, today the clothes in the latest school “line” shimmer with all the colors of the rainbow. This is attractive, but sometimes there are serious mistakes that spoil the image of a young girl.
Shoes with high heels are often chosen as footwear. This is how young “ladies” try to look older than their years, and some try to add a few centimeters to their height. It’s rare to see a look with classic low-heeled pumps or even sneakers. But this also happens.
Since graduations are held in the summer and the weather is usually warm, open sandals and light heels are popular. They perfectly complement the image of a princess in a lush ball gown.
To stand out from the crowd of colorfully dressed graduates, today you need to try especially hard. Most likely, the simplest and most laconic outfits look brighter and more attractive. Against the backdrop of fluffy dresses and bright colors, they look most advantageous.
USSR or now: which outfits are better
It is difficult to answer the question asked clearly and distinctly. This is a choice for everyone. It is enough to look at the photographs of our mothers and grandmothers to understand: the girls looked modest and quite festive. And this is the most important thing for prom.
Today, graduation goes from being a school event to an impromptu fashion show. Moreover, many girls, not yet having a sense of proportion and style, are capable of going overboard with the image.
I believe that the main thing in a young girl is modesty and integrity. If this is expressed in a discreet, but at the same time beautiful and tailored to the occasion, dress, then today’s prom fashion is not bad at all. Bad taste remains taboo at all times.
In the photo, modern graduates are clowns or girls with low social responsibility, or Aunt Moti. Are there any other photos where we can see modern girls with taste?
The article was written as if specifically for elderly people shouting from benches: “But in our time this didn’t happen,” in order to disgrace modern youth.
I would also like to highlight the work of the author, who most likely added a photo to the article with the request “outfits of provincial graduates in the early 2000s.”
But seriously, I hope that the author decided to joke like that and actually thinks much more broadly than what she described in the article.
The USSR is a unique formation, which should have been led only by brilliant, extraordinary individuals, and not the Khrushchevs, Brezhnevs, Chernenkos, and especially not the Gorbachevs and Yeltsins. If not for this, the USSR could have been a model of government for the whole world, which was more than one century behind in its development based on the USA.
What is shown in the last photos is hard to even call graduates!
just prostitutes! no culture in clothes, no fashion! “I got what I had!”
A long time ago, people came up with a cool proverb: “They meet you by your clothes, you see them off by your mind.” Now (with rare exceptions) it is a bunch of clowns (a synonym for the word buffoon, that is, pretending to be who knows what). The guys at prom look more decent than their peers.
These photos of BULGARIAN graduates are already 12 years old. People groaned at them back in my youth, in 2007))
Where did you get the first photo? It was made in Yaroslavl in 1985 on City Day, Yaroslavl was 975 years old. I performed there myself in such a transformer dress. So this photo is not a prom photo.
modesty and poverty are different concepts.
Photos of “modern” graduates are clearly taken from the 90s and 2000s. Now girls neither in big cities nor in the provinces will wear this, because the Internet makes it possible to choose fashionable images and order a dress. The article is about nothing.
Mrs. Trump! It has always remained a mystery to me: why do Jews love to throw feces at the USSR? After all, you founded it!
Hello Victoria! In the first photo in your article, the girl with curly hair on the right is a copy of my sister (we have the same mother, but different fathers). We think it could be another sister (the illegitimate daughter of my sister's father). It would be great to find her. Could you please help me find the source of this photo. Thanks a lot
Hello! The picture was taken from the public domain on the Internet. We don't know how to find the original source.
M-Yes. .. these are not graduates, these are ladies at the show. If they are so battered by the age of 18, what will happen next? The faces are as if they had not been taught for 11 years, but were cursed in all the cracks
Complete nonsense. This year I had my graduation and no one looked like these young ladies in the photo. Nowadays everyone chooses an outfit so that it is beautiful, and not to appear “adult”. My friend, for example, came to Blio, and I had a gray-silver floor-length dress. Many were in vintage outfits. There is no need to confuse the bad taste of individual girls with the preferences of the majority of young people.
