Why do you need to know the size chart of women's dresses?
If you don't know your clothing size, buying clothes becomes much more difficult. Not only do you have to constantly try on a lot of different clothes, but many stores also limit the number of things you can take into the fitting room. As a result, shopping, which is supposed to be relaxing, turns into constant walking in circles:
- Selection of different sizes of one model.
- Queue for the fitting room.
- Fitting.
- Finding other clothes if this one doesn't fit.
- Return to the first point.
As a result, buying a new item does not bring the anticipated pleasure, but rather the tedious standing in line and the agony of choice in an attempt to reduce the number of things to try on.
But if buying clothes in stores still allows you to try them on, then what to do with online stores? Purchasing clothes online allows you to greatly diversify your wardrobe, which will make you stand out from the crowd (especially true for small towns, where everyone dresses in the same stores). When buying things online, you can't even touch the clothes to even assess whether it will suit you or not. And payment is always made in advance, and not in all cases there is a possibility of a refund.
The salvation from such situations is the size chart, however, you can fly through it, since there are several types of them, and you need to navigate your size according to each one, so that instead of your miniature 40, you don’t accidentally buy a European version several sizes larger.
Women's dress size chart
It is worth paying considerable attention to the fact that different types of clothing have their own size chart. For example, there are grids for:
- underwear (in particular, bras);
- shoulder products (dresses, T-shirts, sweaters);
- waist items (trousers, skirts, jeans);
- outerwear;
- headdresses.
Help: there is a general sizing chart created to simplify things, but sometimes it’s quite difficult to get to the right size using it.

Before determining your dress size using any of the scales, you need to take measurements. In this case, you will need to know:
- chest circumference (you should measure using underwear, as bras often add volume);
- waist circumference;
- hip girth.
You also need to know your height, at least roughly. If possible and desired, it can be measured.
Important: when measuring height in the case of a dress, you should also count heels if you plan to wear them with it.
Sizes according to Russian standards
Russian mesh is found in most domestic manufacturers, although many of them already prefer international mesh. It is regulated by GOST. The Russian grid is characterized by a small step, which is considered an advantage, and an average ratio of parameters, which is often a disadvantage.
According to it, the tag indicates a number in the range: as a rule, from 40 to 58. There are also sizes beyond this range, but they are less common.
European sizes
In European countries they adhere to their own size chart. The following range of numbers is usually found on their clothing: 32–58. As a rule, to simply determine it, you need to subtract 8 from your size on the Russian scale. However, the European grid is strongly focused on height, so if your height is far from average, then it is better to also focus on measurements.
Help: there is also a separate grid according to which clothes are made in the USA and America; its step starts from 0, so to determine your size you need to subtract 38.
International Size Chart
The international sizing chart was introduced to make shopping easier across countries. Some manufacturers put on the tag both a number according to their usual scale and a letter (or a combination of both) according to the international one.

How to choose the right dress according to the size chart
It should be understood that the sizes of individual manufacturers may differ slightly from each other, since everyone has different patterns.Therefore, it is necessary to adapt for each company separately, that is, take not one, but two things with you to the fitting room.
The same rule should be followed by girls who, for example, have breasts of the same size, but larger hips. Sometimes certain models of clothing are saved, since in this case it is not always possible to win with more or less item.
What should girls with a non-standard figure do?
It is clear that few girls have a standard figure. Almost everyone has one or another discrepancy with the grid. This is not a bad thing, it’s just easier for manufacturers to focus on something average when creating clothes, so when buying, in addition to the size, you should also take into account the characteristics of your figure. Some of the most common ones include:
- Long waist. In this case, you should give preference to clothes whose size is one step larger than yours.
- Long arms. Their owners are advised to immediately take two sizes into the fitting room: their own and one larger.
- Short stature. In most cases, you will have to abandon a floor-length dress, since it is almost impossible to find a suitable one without a hem, and visually such a dress will shorten your height even more.
When buying a dress, knowing that it will not suit you, you can choose two options: alter the finished product or have the dress made to order.
