What types of scarves are there?

A scarf is an additional accessory in the wardrobe of a modern person. Basically, scarves are present in women's wardrobes, but due to their diversity, they are also worn by men. Scarves have been known since ancient times: they were worn by warriors in Ancient China and Rome; Israelis believe that Jesus' head was covered with a cloth, later called a "plate", when he was crucified on the cross; neckerchiefs were used by knights under their armor as protection against chafing.

scarvesIn the Middle Ages, scarves were considered a sign of wealth among noble people - they were embroidered with gold and silver threads, decorated with lace, ribbons and bows. It was obligatory to embroider the coats of arms of the owners or monograms on the corners of the scarf. There were also a great variety of ways to tie scarves, that is, knots, each knot had its own name. We have come down to such names of knots as “ascot”, “solitaire”, “a la Byron”, “Irish”, “Primo Tempo”.

Scarves come in neck scarves, head scarves, chest scarves, and handkerchiefs.They are made from different types of fabrics: silk, linen, cotton, down, artificial materials. There are so many types of scarves that it would take a very long time to list them, so we’ll focus on the most basic ones.

Types of scarves

bandanaBandana - a small triangular or rectangular scarf. Made mainly from cotton. The classic bandana comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Spain is considered the birthplace of bandanas - shepherds wore them there. Later, American cowboys also began to wear bandanas, tying them on the front of their faces to protect them from dust.
Currently, a bandana folded into a strip is tied on the forehead, with the knot located at the back of the neck. Sometimes a bandana is tied like a scarf, in which case it serves as protection from the sun and wind.

Kerchief It has only a triangular shape. As a rule, a headscarf is used to cover the head or neck. In this case, the nodes can be located both in front and behind.

scarf mufflerMuffler - a large rectangular scarf. It serves to protect against cold and wind, therefore it is made mainly from dense natural fabrics. The muffler is wrapped around the neck in several layers. This is the most common way of wearing, but sometimes the muffler is simply thrown over the shoulders and the ends are left hanging freely in front. In this case, the muffler complements the fashionable look.

shawlShawl made in the form of a large square. The side of the shawl must be at least 120 centimeters. Today, the shawl is an item only in women's wardrobe. The shawl can be knitted or woven. A shawl is used to cover the head and upper body to keep warm during the cold season.

stoleStole has the shape of a rectangle. Typically, stoles are made so large that they can be comfortably wrapped around the neck.You can cover your head with a stole, using it as a shawl to protect from the cold, or throw it over your shoulders - in this case, the stole serves as a cape. Stoles can be plain or patterned. They are made from natural fabrics, but synthetic fibers are sometimes added to the fabric for durability.

pareoPareo refers to beachwear. This scarf is large in size. Due to its size, the pareo can be used not only as a cape, but also, tied in a certain way, as a beach dress. There are many ways to tie a pareo; each representative of the fair sex will find her own unique way of tying a pareo to look irresistible. The pareo serves as protection from the sun and ultraviolet rays. The fabrics for making pareos are taken from the most unpretentious ones, since it is believed that pareos should be wrinkle-free and dry quickly.

keffiyeh (arafatka)Keffiyeh - a headscarf, which is an item of clothing exclusively in the men's wardrobe in hot Muslim countries. Arabs wear the keffiyeh to protect themselves from the scorching rays of the sun. Natural fabrics for keffiyeh are cotton and wool. There are many ways to wear the keffiyeh - some simply cover the head with it, others attach an igal - a woolen cord that holds the keffiyeh on the head - on top of the keffiyeh. Still others tie a keffiyeh on their heads in the form of a turban. The keffiyeh has many different names, but one of the most famous is the Arafatka, named after Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who wore the keffiyeh.

hijabHijab - a women's headscarf in Muslim countries. It is believed that only men who are close relatives have the right to see a woman’s hair, so the hijab is worn in such a way as to completely prevent curls from peeking out from under the headscarf.

Fichu - This is a neck or chest scarf that ladies wore in past centuries. In the seventeenth century, a very deep cutout on the chest in ladies' attire came into fashion, and ladies, in order to have a decent image, covered their chests with fichu made of cambric or muslin.

pashaPache scarf is a men's wardrobe accessory. The pasha measures no more than 50x50 centimeters, as it fits into the outer breast pocket of a jacket. The ends of the pasha must look outward by 3-4 centimeters.

square scarfKare - these are scarves from the Hermes fashion house. They are made in only 6 different sizes - from 16x16 cm to 90x90 cm. The fabric for the bob is made from silkworm cocoons. The bob is worn not only in traditional ways, but also as decorations on wrists, clothes, and bags.

Orenburg downyOrenburg downy shawl knitted from goat down and silk thread used as a warp. The production of these scarves began in the second half of the eighteenth century, and today it occupies a strong position.

PavloposadskyPavlovo Posad shawl - These are large shawls with bright floral prints. But floral designs were not always present - initially, in the eighteenth century, these scarves were produced only with paisley patterns.
