The word “shirt” refers to both a part of a men’s suit and a type of women’s underwear. A shirt is often mistaken for it. So which clothes should be called a shirt and which should not?
What is a shirt?
In Rus', this element of clothing appears in the 13th century. The original name was “sorochitsa,” which literally meant “close to the skin.” The name also explains the purpose of the “shirt” - it was worn under outerwear. Made from thin natural fabrics. This product protected against sweat, prevented the suit from wearing out, and prevented skin friction against rough materials. For women it also served as nightwear. The shirt was not supposed to be shown to others, but for a rich person it could be decorated with lace that peeked out from under the outer clothing.
Later, this item of clothing began to be considered part of the morning wardrobe. Although the purpose of the “shirt” has undergone changes over time, it still remains underwear, which is usually worn under a suit.
Characteristic features of the shirt
In the modern world, a shirt is an element of a man's wardrobe. It is worn only under a jacket or vest. Unlike a shirt, it is always tucked into trousers. Previously, cuffs were supposed to be fastened exclusively with cufflinks, but today there are models with buttons.
A shirt has a lot in common with a shirt, but there are also significant differences. It is not sewn from flannel or denim fabric, nor is it decorated with decorative elements. A shirt is an attribute of official and business style, so even modern models are distinguished by rigor and tradition. In its design, flashy colors, bright buttons, and checkered patterns are not allowed. Such clothing is accepted at business meetings and important events.
Male or female?
Women's shirts are wearable dresses made from soft natural fabrics. Used as sleepwear. Summer models are sewn from light, often transparent material, while winter ones are sometimes made from thick fabrics.
Men's models can also look like dresses - the length of some products reaches the knee. But if a man’s shirt is visible from under a jacket, it is customary to hide a woman’s shirt entirely. What these wardrobe elements have in common is that they are worn on the naked body or over underwear.
Sewing materials
To sew classic men's shirts, natural materials are used that allow the leather to “breathe.” Most often used:

- cotton with the addition of synthetic materials.
The use of pure synthetics is not recommended - such fabrics increase sweating and create a feeling of discomfort. Products made from silk are considered hypoallergenic, but cotton is most often used in production. The fabric should be dense, without gaps.
The preferred color of the material is white.There are models in light and delicate tones: pale blue, pinkish, etc. Saturated dark colors (burgundy, blue, brown) are acceptable. Unlike shirts, shirts are not usually made from fabric with patterns or prints. The color of the buttons must match the color of the product itself.
Collars should be firm as they are intended to be worn with a tie or bow tie. The classic collar size is 7 cm.
In what cases can it be worn?
The shirt is a festive and official detail of the costume. Most often it is worn in the following cases:
- Important meeting.
- Serious meeting.
- Solemn event.
- Business reception.
This item of clothing is an integral part of the wardrobe of company executives, office employees with a strict dress code, participants in international forums, etc.
In liberal organizations with more relaxed clothing requirements, a shirt may be worn under a jacket.

Classic models that do not lose their relevance have the following characteristics:
