Do you want to surprise and delight your child on his birthday? Try making a homemade gift that will surely delight him if he is partial to the Harry Potter films. The accessory that the character wore throughout the series is a scarf that you knitted yourself.
Knitting a Harry Potter scarf
Knitting a striped Harry Potter neck accessory is quite easy even for beginners, and if you know how to knit, it will not be difficult at all.
Choosing yarn for a scarf
In order to purchase yarn, decide on the model of the product you want to knit. The fact is that this accessory did not always look the same on the movie hero.
So, in the first episodes, Harry wore a striped scarf with dark brown stripes alternating with light stripes of approximately the same width.
In recent episodes he has changed somewhat. Now wide stripes began to alternate with narrow ones.
And you can also link it like any of the different Hogwarts faculties. Their colors are as follows:
- Gryffindor - gold and red;
- Hufflepuff – black and yellow;
- Ravenclaw - silver and blue;
- Slytherin - green and silver.
So, choosing a specific option is a matter of your taste and desire.
It is better to take woolen yarn for a scarfso that in cold weather it warms the throat. You will need two colors of thread. The thread consumption for the product will be 200 g of yarn of one color and 200 g of another color.
Knitting process
Choose the length of the scarf at your discretion. The optimal size would be 1–1.5 m.
You will need 3 mm knitting needles, 3 mm crochet hook, 300-400 g wool yarn in two colors.
Knitting technique
Elastic band 1x1 or 2x2:
- To get started, cast on 50 loops with the main color and knit with an elastic band 1x1 or 2x2, whichever you prefer.
- Knit 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch and so on until the end of the row. Knit all purl rows according to the pattern.
Double elastic:
When knitting with a double elastic band, we knit an edge loop for each row, and then through one loop we knit a knit stitch and pull the thread inside the work. It turns out like a pipe, inside of which there is a working thread.
Maintaining a scarf pattern with stripes of the same width:
- Knit an elastic band with threads of the same color for 20 cm. Once completed, carefully tie a knot. The ends of the thread must be hidden on the wrong side of the work.
- Switch to wool of a different color and knit another 20 cm.
- Change the color of the yarn every 20 cm.
- At the end of knitting, be sure to knit 20 cm with the main color.
You can knit a scarf by alternating wide and narrow stripes:
- We knit with the main color 40 cm.
- We switch to threads of a different color, knit 4 rows, 4 more rows with threads of the main color and 4 more rows with threads of a different color.
- Then we knit 40 cm again with yarn of the main color.
- We repeat the drawing.
The width of the stripes can be chosen at your discretion.
You can also knit a Harry Potter scarf not with knitting needles, but with crochet.
Crochet technique
- We cast on a chain 25 cm long and knit it in single crochets with 20 cm yarn of the main color.
- Switch to yarn of a different color.
- We knit 20 cm and change the color of the yarn. Thus, we knit the entire scarf with alternating colors of yarn.
- At the end, you must knit 20 cm of yarn of the main color.
Decorating the scarf with an emblem and fringe
Once the scarf is knitted, you can decorate it with tassels. One-color or two-color fringe will look equally good on a scarf. A sewn-on emblem (available for sale in sewing supply stores) will give the product a finished look and look like a Harry Potter scarf.
