Knitting is a traditional type of needlework that does not lose its popularity.
Women who know how to knit can create a unique item in a fashionable hand-made style, please their loved ones with a new thing, or give a gift to friends. Therefore, the ranks of knitters are constantly growing.
Beginning needlewomen choose simple products for themselves, for example, a scarf or hat.
We will tell you how to calculate the amount of yarn required for knitting.
What determines the volume of yarn?
If you want to knit a scarf, there are a few important decisions you need to make.
- What will be the length and width of the product.
- How to knit: elastic, satin stitch, pattern, openwork.
- Which tool do you prefer to do the job: knitting needles or crochet hook?
Keep in mind that a product made with openwork requires less yarn. And if selected the pattern is braided or criss-crossed, then more thread will be neededthan when knitting with regular stockinette stitch.
The packages usually indicate the weight of the skein and the length of its thread. The necessary data is also available in knitting patterns. But we don’t always choose fibers that completely match in thickness. Therefore, you will have to do preliminary calculations yourself.
How to calculate the amount of yarn for a scarf
The easiest way to determine is using a sample.
Important: for the sample, choose threads of the same thickness as the yarn from which you want to knit a new thing.
- Knit a sample - a square with a side of 10 cm. You need to knit it with exactly the same pattern that is chosen for the future product.
- Having completed an element, it must be wash and then let dry. Now measure the sides to see if any changes have occurred to the product.
- Calculate the area of the sample and the area of the scarf. To calculate, you need to multiply the length by the width.
- Unravel the sample and measure the length of the thread, from which he was connected.
- Multiply the area of the product by the length of the thread.
- The resulting value divide by the area of the sample.
- As a result of these mathematical calculations we get the total length of yarnwhich you will need for the scarf.
- Divide by the length in 1 skein and find out how many skeins you will need.
When purchasing, it is recommended to add up to 20-30%. It’s better that you have some thread left than to find that you’ve run out of yarn and can’t buy one.
Important! If you decide to crochet, increase the amount of yarn by 50%.
Approximate amount of yarn for scarf and hat
To help with calculations, we suggest using the approximate weight of yarn that goes into product knitted in stockinette stitch with 32/2 threads.
Knowing the weight of the skein, you can also determine the number of skeins.
Scarf and hat set
- Women's set with a short scarf – 250 g.
- The same outfit with a large scarf – 600 g.
- Men's set, knitted in 4 threads (8 folds) – 300 g.
- Children's products, knitted in 3 threads (6 folds) – 200 g.
