Is it possible to wear shorts to college: a lawyer's answer
Following the example of many large enterprises, universities and colleges at various levels are introducing codes of corporate ethics within their walls. These documents are required for students to read and teachers must follow. Usually they are freely available in any of the dean's offices. If there is no such document in a given college or institute, this does not mean at all that you can feel independent and choose your clothing style arbitrarily.
When entering an educational institution, an applicant becomes familiar not only with the curriculum, but also with the rules that are mandatory for all students. This includes:
- university charter;
- management orders;
- inner order rules.
How teachers and students are required to dress may be specified in any of these documents.You can always find out accurate information from the rector’s office, as well as on the website of the university or institute.
Accordingly, the answer to the question: “is it possible to come to classes in shorts” should be sought in any of the listed documents. Practice shows that most often this type of clothing is not on the permitted list.
Is it possible to wear shorts to university: who can ban students from wearing such outfits?
According to the management of most educational institutions in Russia, students' neatness and business style in appearance are best conducive to business communication, and also serve as a means of expressing respect. If students dress this way, it is easier for them to tune in to the learning process, concentrate on work and interact with the teaching staff. In addition, all this helps to improve the reputation of the university, establishing its high status and image.
The head of an educational institution has the right to prohibit the wearing of shorts, short skirts, jeans, sandals and open blouses. This may be directly stated in the internal regulations, the right to approve which, as well as to make the necessary amendments later, only the manager has.

Who decides whether you can wear shorts to university?
It is not as simple as it may seem to formulate the internal regulations of universities and mid-level educational institutions. Even the rector does not have full powers to prohibit or allow something. He can accept an offer from the teaching staff or student union only if he complies with the current legislation.
How are the internal regulations of a higher education institution drawn up?
Each set of rules must necessarily be based on the provisions of:
- Constitution of the Russian Federation.
- Labor Code of the Russian Federation.
- Federal Law of December 29, 2012 No. 273FZ “On Education in the Russian Federation.”
- Charter.
- collective agreement.
The final version is approved by the rector after agreement with the trade union committee. Once approved, the document has no validity period. If necessary, additions may be made by separate orders.
Are there penalties for violating university internal regulations?
Curators of study groups, university administration, and teaching staff are empowered to monitor students' compliance with the permitted dress code. If a violation is detected, the student is given a verbal warning for the first time, and the teacher has the right to send the offender home from class. In this case, he will be given a pass in the visit log without a valid reason.
If violations by a student are committed systematically, then the management of the educational institution has the right to involve parents in solving the problem, as well as impose disciplinary punishment provided for by the internal regulations.
What outfits for students are best suited for visiting a university?
The classic office dress code is the best guide for a student if a given educational institution does not have a uniform uniform. For boys and girls, traditional sets include:
- Boys wear three-piece trouser suits, consisting of trousers, a shirt (white, pastel shades, with a small, discreet checkered or striped pattern) and a jacket (blazer), which may additionally be accompanied by a vest. It is allowed to wear jumpers and sleeveless vests in a classic style over a shirt in the cold season. A tie is desirable. Shoes are also of the classic type: shoes, boots.
- Girls - sets of a straight or flared silhouette skirt and a shirt or blouse with long or short sleeves, without a deep neckline, in calm or pastel colors (white, beige, blue, gray) or an unobtrusive pattern. Classic-style dresses with long sleeves or sleeveless are allowed, but then they are worn with shirts or blouses. Classic trouser suits are allowed, but only in combination with shirts, jackets, blazers, vests.Shoes – shoes with a closed toe and heel with a low, stable heel, without decorations, mostly plain.
According to surveys, every second student believes that their rights to dress code requirements are infringed, but we have to admit: wearing shorts to university is not yet allowed.
It's +30 outside, I'm drowning in sweat in shorts. Wearing denim shorts is allowed into our rather reputable university without any problems.
In my first year I wore bright, tight-fitting red and blue jumpers with a deep neckline, but now, fortunately, I realized that this was nonsense, and I don’t do that. But in the summer at +40 I calmly walked around in sandals, otherwise excuse the mockery, and even the teachers wear them. As for the ban on piercings and tattoos, I think it’s complete nonsense, what should I do with this? Fortunately, our university prohibits only 3 attributes: tracksuits, shorts for girls and clothes with holes. However, students calmly go to school in them, no one stops them. But I don’t wear these 3 attributes :)
