Styles of nutria fur coats: examples with photos

A nutria fur coat is an inexpensive but effective wardrobe item that will delight you for several seasons. A high-quality product will last 5–8 years, after which it will show severe abrasions on the sleeves and around the hem. The defects are actually not critical and can be easily corrected. You can get rid of them by altering the product and changing the style of the fur coat. There are a lot of the latter, because nutria is a convenient and popular material.

Features of fur

straightThe fur comes from a rodent that looks like a large guinea pig. The animal lives near stagnant and swampy bodies of water and leads a semi-aquatic lifestyle. A comfortable stay in the water is ensured by the waterproof, twisted in structure, very coarse and fairly long pile. The undercoat is softer, located much more evenly and an order of magnitude thicker (15 thousand fibers per 1 cm²).

Animal's natural color: brown. The shade is uneven, the transitions are sharp. Moreover, this property is noticeable even when examining the same hair.
Individuals bred in captivity may have a non-standard color:

  • golden;
  • beige;
  • pink;
  • white;
  • black.

Nutria fur is valued for the strength of its awns, the softness of its undercoat and its characteristic pleasant shine. Well-cured skins also retain some of their waterproof properties.. They produce a fur coat that is less susceptible to deformation, wear and “balding” when in contact with wet snow and when used in regions with high humidity. To a lesser extent - this is in comparison with products made from other types of fur.

Important! Clipped nutria partially loses its softness. If you want a short fur coat that is not rough and not scratchy, ask to see models with plucked, rather than trimmed, hair. However, you will have to pay more for the latter option.

In terms of heat-protective properties, nutria is inferior to some other types of fur. Items made from it are not suitable for constant wear in Siberia or the North; they cannot properly protect against extreme cold. Especially if the impact is expected to be long-lasting. However, there is no better option for regions where morning snowfall can change into wet snow and rain during the day, and turn into a piercing snowstorm in the evening.

Important! For a more uniform and deep color, nutria skins are dyed. Some manufacturers save on the procedure, because of this, fur coats lose pigment when wet and in contact with other things. Before purchasing the product, be sure to rub the lint with a white cotton scarf. If it becomes stained, then you need to take a closer look at another item of outerwear.

What styles of nutria fur coats are there?

Almost all types of fur coats are made from nutria. Fur is not suitable only for creating things that require very long and thick pile at the same time.

A-line

Fur coats of this style are narrower on top than on the bottom. The expansion can be gradual or sudden, significant or less pronounced. The waistline is not defined at all or is raised towards the chest.

Cape

This is outerwear of a loose, non-fitting style without sleeves, with imitation or very wide pleated sleeves. The style itself adds volume, but in combination with fur, the effect of enlargement can be excessive. You should be careful when purchasing long-pile cape-type fur coats; it is better to opt for short-pile options.

Important! This wardrobe item is often confused with a poncho. The comparison is incorrect, since the last category of things does not have seams and darts that ensure a strict fit.

Poncho

The classic version has no fasteners or sleeves. To put it on, you just need to stick your head through the cutout. It is located in the middle of the thing, which in fact is nothing more than a large rectangular canvas. Moreover, the item of clothing made in accordance with traditional standards, one of the corners falls on the middle of the front of the hem.

Redesigned models are not always seamless. They can be wrapped, fastened with buttons, a lock, or a combination of the last 2 options. The canonical cut is also violated in relation to the sleeves. Today, such fur coats are quite often produced with wide, kimono-like sleeves. Instead, sometimes there are cuffs (they are attached to the edge of the hem). With this style, the owner can choose whether to insert her hand into the sleeve or wear the item like a traditional poncho.

Other style options:

  • a very short poncho ending just after the chest;
  • lightweight model made of short-haired fur;
  • asymmetrical cape that slightly reveals the shoulder;
  • the poncho is made of a different material, and the nutria acts as a trim for the functional elements (hood, sleeves) and hem.

Nutria is often combined with mink, mouton, faux fur, genuine leather, textiles, and suede.
