An elegant men's evening suit with lapels decorated with silk is called a tuxedo (from the English “smoking jacket” - a jacket for smoking). Many people mistakenly believe that a tuxedo is an ordinary jacket and trousers. But such a suit has its own characteristics that distinguish it from all other items of men's wardrobe.
The world first learned about the tuxedo 150 years ago. In the mid-19th century, homemade velvet jackets were popular among noble men. They were worn over a tailcoat while smoking cigars, so as not to spoil the expensive fabric with ash, since it was not shaken off (this gesture was considered a sign of bad taste).
However, the true “birth” of the tuxedo is associated with the name of Prince Edward of Wales (in the future he became King Edward IV). It was he who first appeared in society in a jacket that vaguely resembled the already familiar smoking jacket, but more businesslike and strict.
After some time, this jacket became popular among English youth. It was used as an alternative to a tailcoat and was worn to important but informal events, such as home dinner parties and club gatherings.By the way, this item of men's clothing was called a dinner jacket in England. In combination with trousers, the name was slightly different “dinner suit”.
In American society of that era, a suit with silk lapels was called Tuxedo in honor of the famous club of that time, whose members were the first to appreciate the merits of this item of men's clothing. In the Russian Empire and some other states the term “tuxedo” began to be used. Today this name is considered the official name for such a men's suit.
Characteristic features of a tuxedo are silk or satin lapels on the jacket and the same stripes on the trousers. The color choice is limited: the suit can be black or dark blue. It is considered an element of an evening wardrobe, and therefore it is not recommended to use it as casual wear. Don’t wear it to a cocktail or youth party either.
An important element of a tuxedo is the buttons. They are not just plastic, but covered with the same fabric from which the lapels are made. The jacket can be single-breasted or double-breasted, and trousers should not be accompanied by a belt. Instead of this accessory, it is permissible to use suspenders (which are hidden under a vest) or a special belt with folds.
The tuxedo shirt should be white, with single cuffs for cufflinks. Shoes are exclusively black. Oxford shoes made of smooth or patent leather are preferred.
In the classic version, you need to choose a strict black bow tie for a tuxedo. However, modern men are increasingly abandoning this sometimes uncomfortable but elegant accessory.
Of course, a classic tuxedo is great. But fashion does not stand still and today stylists are increasingly offering men very unusual versions of this suit. For example, an interesting model made of velvet. It deserves special care, but it looks flawless and luxurious.
A white tuxedo, another suit option, would be an excellent solution for a young, confident man. However, it is worth remembering how easy it is to put a stain on a white jacket, so in such a suit you will have to be especially careful about the movement of your own hands.
