Fashionable and at the same time comfortable sweaters are models with raglan. The essence of this type of cut is that the sleeve will be together with the front and back of the product. Previously, in addition to its aesthetic advantages, protection from rain was valued in raglan, since only with such a sleeve there would be no shoulder seams. This happened at the time of the appearance of the raglan itself (the sleeve was named in honor of Field Marshal F. J. Raglan in the 1820s). We knit a raglan sweater with knitting needles at the top and bottom
Knitting raglan is not that difficult, you just need to understand the principle. Many products knitted in this way will not require assembly at all.
Important! Knitting a raglan sleeve on top is not only convenient, but as a result you can get a well-stretching and even yoke. After all, making an even yoke can be difficult even for an experienced craftsman.
Raglan can be made from above and below; let's take a closer look at each method.
Two methods of knitting raglan sleeves
Knitting raglan from below is divided into two ways:
1) Knit the back, front, 2 sleeves to the armholes. Then transfer everything to the knitting needles in the following order:
- before;
- sleeve;
- back;
- sleeve.
Knit according to the pattern with decreases at 4 points.
2) Knit the back and front in one piece. Do the same with the sleeves. Next, transfer everything to the knitting needles and make decreases according to the diagram. Moreover, this knitting technique does not imply boring motifs.
For example, the sleeves themselves may include relief patterns.
Examples of decreases for raglan can combine graceful braids.
Important! It is recommended to knit raglan on top if a round yoke is planned.
The photo shows that knitting begins with the yoke itself. Further additions at 4 points. As soon as the knitting is at the level of the beginning of the armhole, you need to select two sleeves (throw the loops onto special additional knitting needles). The front and back can be continued with a one-piece piece.
Women's sweater with raglan sleeves for knitting
A popular model of a women's sweater with smooth raglan lines. Emphasis on the sleeves due to openwork ornaments.
In women's model a voluminous openwork motif was used. It follows from the yoke itself to the cuff. This visually lengthens the arms, and the same motif is used along the side seam line.

- knitting needles No. 2 (for making elastic) and No. 3 (for creating the main fabric);
- Alize yarn (49% wool, 51% acrylic) No. 193 (required for approximately size 50, 290 g).
The process of knitting a raglan sweater on top with knitting needles
On knitting needles for sizes 48-50 you will need to cast on 128 stitches (42 for the front and the same for the back, 2 loops for each of the 4 raglans, 18 for each sleeve).
Yoke
Cast on 128 stitches using size 2 knitting needles and complete 10 rows using 2*2 rib.
Description of the elastic band:
This is a regular elastic band; in each row, alternating 2 knit and 2 purl loops are performed. Moreover, each subsequent rows should copy the loops below them; only the front loops will be located above the two knit loops of the previous row. Likewise with the purl loops.
You can select the yoke with a special hollow rubber band. To do this, immediately after the 2*2 elastic band, you should proceed to the hollow elastic pattern.
Next, switch to needles number 3.
Raglan
Work the front and back stitches in stockinette stitch (in each round, the back and front stitches should only be knit stitches).
For each sleeve, place a pattern from the openwork pattern in the center.
Openwork scheme
Description:
1 row: three purl/p., one yarn over, three knit/p., one broach (slip one loop as a knit stitch, then create the next knit loop, then pull the resulting loop through the slipped loop), eight purl/st, knit two loops together k/p, three knit stitches, one yarn over, three purl loops;
3rd row: three purl/pet., one knit loop, one yarn over, three knit loops, one broach, purl six loops, knit two loops together, three knit loops, one yarn over, one knit loop, three purl loops;
5 row: three purl/pet., two knit/pet., one yarn over, three knit/pet., one broach, four purl/pet., two knit loops together, three knit loops, one yarn over, two knit loops, three purl loops;
7 row: three purl/pets, three knit stitches, one yarn over, three knit/pets, pull through, two purl/pets, two knit stitches together, three knits/pets, one yarn over, three knits/pets, three purl ;
9 row: three purl/pets, four knit/loops, one yarn over, three knit/pets, pull through, knit two loops together, three knit loops, one yarn over, four knit loops, three purl loops.
The diagram shows the rapport: the first rapport is A and it begins after the first two purl loops and ends after the second yarn over and purl loop. Rapport B occupies all loops of the circuit.
The loops before and after the openwork pattern are knit loops.
Raglan additions will look neat if you use a special pattern with purl loops.
After 30 rows of increments, place the sleeve stitches on additional needles.
Front and back
In this model, the front and back should be knitted in one piece.
On the first row, start by adding the lace pattern instead of the side seams.
Continue knitting until the desired length. Switch to knitting needles No. 2 again and perform 10 rows of 2*2 rib.
Sleeves
Continue each sleeve with additional knitting needles using only one-piece pieces. Measure the desired length and tie to it. Then change the needles to number 2 and create 10 rows of 2*2 rib.
Important! Each sleeve will require the following decreases. It is better to do them along the seam line, so it will be invisible. It is necessary to make only 16 decreases for each sleeve strictly up to the elbow, distribute evenly so that there is a smooth transition.
A very stylish and comfortable sweater was created quickly and easily.
