Tunic

In the classical sense, a tunic is a baggy garment with slits for the arms and head. It is completely shapeless, and therefore does not hinder movements. But nowadays, a tunic is a stylish and beautiful wardrobe item with which you can create impeccable looks.

The main feature of the tunic is its cut. It is necessarily elongated, free, slightly airy. Today it is worn mainly by women, but in the distant past it was also popular with men.

Story

Tunic invented by the ancient Romans. They used it as everyday clothing, with men wearing a toga (a piece of white cloth that was wrapped around the body) on top, and women wearing two tunics at once: with sleeves and without sleeves (the latter was worn on top, like a modern vest).

Roman tunics

A little later, instead of slits for the arms, sleeves appeared, but there was no collar (in ancient times they did not know about it). The length varied: from mid-thigh and below. At the same time, models that covered their knees were tied with a belt.

The ancient tunic was decorated in different ways, each symbol on it spoke of a person’s belonging to a particular social class.

When the era of Ancient Rome sank into oblivion, the tunic did not cease to exist. They began to wear it in Byzantium, and then in the East. It is believed that the Arabs made a great contribution to the development of this type of clothing: they were the first to embroider the tunic with precious stones and beads.

Timid attempts by fashionistas of the past to introduce this wide jacket into European life were not crowned with success. Medieval ladies preferred fluffy dresses and starched skirts, and refused to accept clothes of an unknown cut into their wardrobe. This was the case until the mid-twentieth century, when the hippies appeared. They were the first to use elements of folk costumes, including oriental ones, in their wardrobe.

A little later, Yves Saint Laurent presented the world of high fashion with a collection of tunics that struck the hearts of many. Since then, this clothing has been considered one of the main elements of the wardrobe of many women.

Peculiarities

In order for the tunic to sit freely, without looking like an unsightly bag, it is important to correctly choose a style: slightly flared at the bottom or a completely straight cut, darts in the bust area, properly shaped neckline - all this matters. However, no less important is from which material a specific model is sewn. So, the most commonly used are:

Interesting models made from natural silk, which are not cheap, but look incredibly beautiful.

An excellent option for the cold season is a model made of woolen threads. This is a warm, long jacket that holds heat well and goes well with both jeans and trousers.

Embroidery, rhinestones, unusual prints, and plastic decorations are used as decorative elements. The option with lace or guipure inserts looks romantic and seductive. As a rule, this model is light and weightless, it is ideal as a beach cover-up.

Today, models are popular both with and without sleeves of different lengths, as well as with thin straps. Today, a tunic is worn as an independent item of clothing (in cases where the length allows) or combined with trousers, jeans, capri pants or a knee-length skirt or below. It is not recommended to combine it with short outerwear (when the hem of the tunic sticks out from under the jacket). In addition, it is important to correctly select the color scheme of all elements of the image.
