To leave the hospital with your baby, you should carefully consider the little person’s wardrobe. This is especially true for children born in the cold season. You should also take into account what the weather is like outside the window, because in winter it can be 0 degrees or 30 °C below zero. You can, of course, use a store-bought discharge kit. In this case, all children's things will be in the same color scheme. But it’s cheaper and more practical to choose clothes separately, because in this case some things can be taken “for growth” and used for 2-3 months, and overalls for 1-2 years.
What to dress a newborn for discharge in winter:
- Diapers.
- Baby vest and rompers.
- The suit or “man” is insulated.
- Booties, maybe socks without elastic bands.
- Scratches, and warm mittens on top.
- Hats, preferably with ties, 2 pcs.
- Warm envelope for discharge or overalls.
- Beautiful ribbon.
What to do before discharge
All tests have been done, examinations have been completed, formalities have been completed. You can pick up the statement and the child and go home. But first it’s better to feed the baby so that he doesn’t cry and be capricious on the way. Bring with you a bag with a pacifier, diapers, powder, baby cream, cotton swabs, napkins, a bottle of water, and pacifiers.
And the entire wardrobe of a newborn should be pre-washed with laundry soap, dried and ironed on both sides.
If it is between 0 °C and -5 °C outside
In winter there is also moderate weather. In this case, to dress a newborn for discharge in winter, a thin sleepsuit or romper bodysuit with a vest, on top - a fleece overall, then a thin hat, and on top of it - a woolen one will be enough. After which the baby should be dressed in synthetic overalls.
Thermal underwear is now on sale. But you need to take only a woolen one that is strictly suitable in size and must be worn on a naked body.
If it's minus 10 degrees outside
If the day of discharge turns out to be colder, you will have to add another layer of clothing. But try not to overdo it with clothing, otherwise the baby may become hot, sweat and catch a cold. Over the diaper, put on a cotton sleepsuit (onesie with closed arms and legs), then a fleece overalls. And on top - a warm jumpsuit.
It is better to choose a transformer suit. At first it will be in the form of an envelope, and when the child grows a little, you will transform it so that each leg will be separate. Put a thin and thick hat on your head, and warm booties on your feet.
Try not to arrange a long photo session on the street, but get into the car as quickly as possible and take your child home.
If it's minus 15 degrees outside
For first-time mothers and suspicious mothers, it is better to grab as many baby clothes as possible, and with the help of a midwife, decide what the newborn should wear and what is unnecessary.
Here is one option: start with a diaper, then pull a cotton vest with rompers on top. Make sure that the seams in the clothes are facing outwards and it is advisable that the sleeves and pants are sewn. Next layer: warm fleece bodysuit. Experienced maternity hospital workers will definitely advise you to swaddle the baby in a warm diaper afterwards.
First, pull a thin cap over your head and a sheepskin cap over it. And only then wrap it in a sheepskin blanket, which can be traditionally tied with a blue ribbon if there is a boy under it, and a pink one if there is a girl.
Don't forget to place a diaper with a nice corner under the blanket to protect the baby's face from the wind.
If it's minus 25 degrees outside
In such weather, it’s no wonder that even an adult can quickly freeze, let alone a baby! In such a weather situation, you should wear a cotton slip under your sheepskin overalls, warm woolen pants and a blouse on top, two hats, socks or booties, and then the overalls.
Please note that when you connect it in the form of an envelope, a cold wind may blow under the buttons, so it’s better to swaddle the newborn in a blanket on top, tying it with the right color ribbon. And try to keep your child in the fresh air as little as possible - leave the maternity hospital and go straight into the car, so that the joy of discharge is not overshadowed by problems with the child’s health.
If it's minus 30 degrees outside
In severe frost, you will have to put on your baby three layers of clothing - a cotton sleepsuit, on top of it - a knitted suit, then a sweater and wool pants. Two hats - cotton and sheepskin, warm booties. Don't forget about scratches and warm mittens. On top of all this abundance is a warm sheepskin jumpsuit. You can play it safe and also dress the newborn in an envelope - thin or insulated.
Try to choose clothes for your baby so that she is taller. In this case, the slip will not fit too tightly to the body and will not interfere with heat transfer.
Advice for young mothers
It is convenient to use diapers for discharge. First, put on a diaper, a vest with rompers, socks and a thin hat, and only then swaddle your child tightly with a knitted diaper. On top of it is a flannelette diaper, then a warm blanket and, finally, an envelope. There is no need to swaddle your baby at home, and to take him home without hassle, you can do it the old fashioned way.
It is best to choose a slip with a zipper - it will be easier for such an inexperienced mother to pull it on a capricious baby.
There is an opinion that a child should be dressed in the same amount of clothing as an adult, adding another layer. But keep in mind that overheating is much more dangerous for a baby than slight freezing.
Before being discharged from the hospital, the mother must first get dressed and only then dress the child. This rule should be unquestioningly adhered to in the future, when you decide to go for a walk with your daughter or son.
To determine whether the baby is cold outside, you should touch him in the neck area. But if the baby is flushed and sweat appears on his nose, it means he is hot and should remove one layer of clothing.
At first, it is difficult to determine exactly how many layers of clothing a newborn needs. So before dressing your baby during discharge, consult with the medical staff and more experienced mothers.
