Knitting a turtleneck

Many people believe that turtlenecks are exclusively factory-made products made from knitwear or elastic fabric, and certainly do not associate this item of clothing with knitted items. And this is a very big omission for those who are looking for ideas for handicrafts.

Knitted turtleneckAnother plus to the benefits of turtlenecks will be the ability to hide some age-related changes in the skin of the neck, which will also be useful for ladies with excess body weight. And the opportunity to knit such a necessary thing with your own hands puts the turtleneck at the very top of popularity among models and ideas for needlework.

Reference! The neatest turtlenecks are obtained by knitting such products with knitting needles. And the thinner the thread and the tool, the more delicate and refined the thing will be.

Knitting a turtleneck with your own hands

Among the modern man-made models of turtlenecks for women, the following can be distinguished:

  • fine knit turtlenecks with openwork elements or a uniform fabric;
  • turtlenecks in a tighter knit with decorative elements such as braids and arans;
  • turtleneck tunics and turtleneck dresses
  • turtlenecks made from “light” yarn for the warm season, usually knitted with short sleeves or without them at all.

Knitted turtlenecks

Of course, a women's turtleneck, like any other product made from yarn, can be knitted either with knitting needles or with a crochet hook. The crochet hook is preferable for knitting light summer patterns, while knitting needles are more suitable for creating warmer items.

We knit a golf turtleneck sweater from thin yarn with knitting needles

Many representatives of the fair sex should like the one below turtleneck model in the form of a golf sweater made of the finest soft merino yarn. In light colors such a thing will look very gentle and elegant, while in dark colors it will emphasize the slimness of the figure.

It is also worth noting that This model is quite versatile, because it can be worn as a stand-alone product or used with a cardigan or vest. Like any turtleneck, this sweater does not require the use of neckerchiefs and scarves, since the neck here is high and protects the neck well from the effects of low temperatures in the cold season. But of course, if you wish, you can use any bright accessory to add some changes to this delicate look.

Materials and tools

To knit a product for size 46–48 you will need:

  • 12 skeins of 100% merino wool yarn, provided that one skein weighs 25 g with a thread length of 140 m;
  • Straight knitting needles number 2 and 2.5.

Advice! If you want to get a more airy and openwork product, use thicker knitting needles. In this case, the yarn consumption will decrease slightly, and the product itself will not hug the figure as tightly as in the photo, i.e.because the knitting density will also change.

Knitting patterns

When working on the presented sweater model, you need to use two different patterns:

  • elastic band 2*2 format (2 knit stitches, 2 purl loops) with knitting density on knitting needles No. 2 10 cm*10 cm = 42p.*54p.;
  • diamond pattern with knitting density on knitting needles No. 2.5 10 cm * 10 cm = 37 p. * 43 r.

Diagram 1 provides instructions for reproducing the “diamond” pattern, which is the main one in this model. The designation “rapport” means a constantly repeating element of the pattern.

Diagram 2 shows a pattern with which you can check the product at different stages of knitting. Beginning craftswomen usually transfer such a pattern onto paper in full size and apply the elements of the products to the corresponding part. Also, a similar pattern can be created using measurements of your body and, taking into account the knitting density of the samples, calculate the required number of loops for the set.

Knitting a turtleneck in stages

Next, we will dwell in more detail on the description of knitting each of the parts of the turtleneck.

Back:

  • We dial 140p. on knitting needles number 2, we knit them with an elastic band in the format 2 * 2 86 rub. (16 cm).
  • Then, using the “Rhombus” pattern in our work, we knit 112 rubles. (26 cm).
  • After this, for the armholes we will close symmetrically on both sides in succession 1*6p., 1*5p., 1*4p., 1*3p., 1*2p., 1*1p.
  • Then after knitting from the armhole 81r. (17.5 cm) close 12 stitches in the middle. for the neck.
  • The two resulting parts are knitted separately from each other. On the left shoulder (from the neckline on the front side) in the front row we will cover 1*5p., 1*4p., 1*3p. 1*2p., 1*1p. At the same time, after closing 3p. throat, we will close the shoulder three times: 1*9p., 1*9p., 1*10p.
  • We will knit the back on the right side of the neck in a similar way.

Before:

We knit similarly to the back, but knit 120 rubles from an elastic band. (28 cm) and 2 cm for the chest dart, which needs to be placed when sewing in the chest area. We begin shaping the throat from the armhole after 66 rubles. (14 cm). We close the shoulder after 86 rubles. from the armhole.

Sleeves:

  • On knitting needles number 2 we cast on 80 sts, knit with an elastic band of the format 2 * 2 86 r. (16 cm).
  • We change the knitting needles to number 2.5, knit “Rhombus” patterns, adding 4p on both sides. 1 p. (96 rub.). The added loops should be included in the pattern.
  • Then we knit 11p without any increase and make an armhole. To do this, close symmetrically on both sides 1*6p., 1*5p., 1*4p., 1*3p., 1*2p., 17*1p., 24*2p. After this, close the remaining 6 p. in the middle.

Assembly:

  • Connect the parts of the product on the sides, sew in the sleeves.
  • Then we knit a collar from the neckline, casting on needles number 2 152p. and knitting 52r. (14 cm) with an elastic band in 2*2 format. We close the loops.

The versatile turtleneck sweater is ready!
