The nineties are a cult era. Today it is fashionable to exaggerate the significance of that time, refer to it and take reference points for creating stylish images. At the same time, not all trends of that era can be called acceptable. Some of them seem indigestible (and are so, to be honest), others will be a real find. To learn how to distinguish the first category from the second, read this article.
Bad taste or extravagance?
To answer this question, we need to go a little deeper into history. After the collapse of the USSR, people felt an urgent need to demonstrate their independence. Your freedom from rules and norms, templates and boring sameness. People were so fed up with monotony that they literally followed the path of parrots. The more colors the better. The more eye-catching the shade, the more wonderful it is. The more asymmetrical the cut, the more fashionable.
Every person really wanted to stand out from the gray mass.Show that dullness and lack of individuality are a thing of the past. However uniqueness turned out to be not everyone can afford. The intense desire to show off ran into the harsh iceberg of economic reality. As a result, the streets were filled with strangely dressed individuals.
They were not always concerned with the compatibility of the objects from which they composed images. The main task was to “walk” a fashionable item, but not its relevance (exception: clothing that appeared in a large number of subcultures). The absence of landmarks, or rather, their abundance, strengthened the position of eclecticism. So The 90s became a time of fashion without fashion and style without style.
However, there is no need to rush and hang labels. Even if 25–30 years ago people cared little about compatibility, and they could create a look from current, but not in harmony with each other, things, but they themselves the trends of that time seem very interesting and undeservedly deprived of attention. You just need to learn how to wear them correctly - not as they did in the 90s, but more competently. Fortunately, the current economic situation allows you to choose, and not blindly take what someone considered fashionable.
90s trends that are back
Layering, high waist, loose-fitting trousers and oversized clothing – these trends that are relevant today are actually not something new. They dressed exactly the same way in the 90s. But if voluminous down jackets and sweaters calmly entered our wardrobes without causing a stir or outrage, then some other trends literally alarmed the public with their return.
The conversations around are still not subsiding eye-catching rainbow sports sweatshirts. And slightly flared corduroy trousers - especially some crazy burgundy shade - are not always perceived adequately, just like sneakers on a rough platform. Yes, these fashionable solutions are not suitable for everyone and you need to learn how to use them, since there is a high risk of missing and getting into a puddle, but you shouldn’t give up on them because of prejudices. First, you should study controversial and scandalous fashion trends, and only then make a decision regarding their use or ignoring.
Lots of jeans
'90s fashion has returned to the streets with an abundance of classic blue and light blue denim. Moreover there is no need to combine it with anything else. Denim bottoms, a short top (or a T-shirt with rope straps) and a shirt made of the same fabric - and now you are an incredibly stylish girl who closely follows all the changes in the fashion industry.
If the total look seems excessive to you, then replace the short top with a checkered shirt or a loose T-shirt. Men don’t even have to wear anything under a denim shirt.. Moreover, they are quite allowed not to fasten all the buttons on their jeans - in the 90s, few people were embarrassed by the abundance of naked flesh. The current spring-summer season cannot be called restrained or modest in this regard either.
Important! Restraint and a sense of proportion are not about the 90s. If it is a sweater, then 3 sizes larger. If it's a top, it's almost smaller than a bra. If it’s denim, then 90%, or even 100% of the items worn are made from it.
Along with blue denim total looks, denim miniskirts are making a comeback. They were neither seen nor heard for more than 10 years, but now they are with us again. Moreover, the version where the bottom is not hemmed. Sticking threads are not just the norm, they are an obligatory companion to fashionable denim clothing. Including microshorts. Expect them this summer on the streets of all cities.
Preferred trousers high-waisted models with light flares. Well, the most trendy thing promises to be denim overalls. With regular legs or cropped ones - choose any option, both are at the peak of fashion.
Important! If you're looking for a bold look, try a long men's denim shirt that looks like a dress on you, then throw a denim jacket over your shoulders. The look will be complemented by rough footwear: some boots.
Big sizes
Throw out the regular-length tight-fitting T-shirts and warm sweaters that highlight your curves from your wardrobe. Their place should be taken by stretched, wide sweaters and loose long T-shirts. You should also buy denim shirts a size larger.
Important! If you want to get into the 10th, then buy sweaters and T-shirts with large logos placed on the chest. Another option: warm sweaters with ornaments. The latter, by the way, can be shorter.
Fringe
It appeared on shoes, shorts, pants and bags. And to her you don't have to look neat. First of all, this applies to “dangles” on denim wardrobe items. By the way, denim items look great with cowboy boots trimmed with fringe. Examples of bows:
- a light colorful dress, boots with fringes, denim a couple of sizes too large;
- jeans, denim jacket to size, boots with “dangles”;
- jeans, plaid shirt, cowboy boots, belt.
Shoes with grinder motifs
Massive heavy soles, laces, reinforced toes – these are the shoes that today are offered to be worn together with microshorts, jeans and light dresses (primarily with colorful sundresses - the ultimate dream of grunge fans). The brutality and cross-country ability of an “SUV”, apparently, have reigned for a long time on city streets.
Flared trousers
Some people compare girls in flared trousers to the wolf from “Well, Just Wait,” others see them as sailors. The latter, by the way, are not so far from the truth. The wardrobe item was originally part of the uniform of marine fleet employees. Then in the 60s he burst into street fashion, and returned there again only in the wild and chaotic 90s. And in those days the trend was flares not from the hip, but from the knee. Now they wear both options.
Important! Today, trousers and jeans that flare from the hip can be very wide, but the flare from the knee is not yet so pronounced.
Grunge genre
The 90s were the time of the formation of subcultures, many of which had a musical “specialization.” An example of this is the grunge style (aka “marginal chic”). It is based on the stage and everyday image of several cult groups of that time:
- Soundgarden;
- Nirvana;
- Alice in Chains;
- a number of others.
The listed groups played an alternative and often appeared on stage in conspicuously sloppy, almost homely outfits. Jeans, the legs of which have acquired fringes and discolored knees from wear, a stretched T-shirt, rough boots or worn-out sneakers, some kind of flannel shirt or a T-shirt with short sleeves, worn over a long sleeve - this is what the “uniform” of the legendary Kurt Cobain, the leader of Nirvana, looked like. And he was imitated by millions of people around the world. Moreover, the passion for grunge faded away only towards the end of the 2000s.Now it is becoming mega-relevant again.
Vibrant sport
Remember sweatpants from the 90s? In fact, it is simply impossible to forget them, because they combined the following characteristics and elements:
- bright main background;
- logos (on the trouser leg, on the chest, on the back, on the sleeves - there are many placement options);
- loose clothing (the jacket was baggy, although the hem and sleeves had drawstrings and elastic bands);
- stripes contrasting with the main background and adjacent lines.
The abundance of colors (or rather their variety and acidity), stripes and robe are again among the trends. Any day now we should expect the return and the cut itself.
Round glasses
Lennons have been showing off on the faces of hipsters and the advanced part of youth for at least 2 years now. Allow yourself such a “zest”, but don’t take the first frame you come across. First, carefully study your face shape and color type. There is no other way, because round glasses are a very capricious and complex trend.
