We sew a skirt for a doll
Models of doll skirts can be very different.
How to sew a straight skirt for Barbie
Step-by-step instruction
- Cut a strip of fabric from the scraps. The width should be equal to the length of the desired skirt + 1 cm for allowance. The length is at least equal to the waist circumference multiplied by 2.
- The bottom edge of the strips is hemmed, this will be the hem.
- Step back a little from the top edge and sew the strip along its entire length using wide stitches.
IMPORTANT! To create pleats, begin to tighten the loose threads on the sides of your stitch.
- Try the blank on your doll, adjust the folds and waist width if necessary.
- Make a belt. Fold a thin strip of fabric lengthwise and sew it to the top edge of the skirt.
- Instead of a belt, you can sew an elastic band, so the clothes will fit even better at the waist.
- If necessary, trim any loose threads.
The skirt is ready!
How to sew a half-sun skirt for Tilda
We suggest making the skirt two layers.
You will need:
- two types of fabric;
- threads matching the color;
- scissors;
- lace braid;
- belt material;
- marker;
- pins for securing parts.
Completing of the work
To create a pattern, you will need to take two measurements from Tilda.
- Waist circumference + from 0.5 to 1 cm per seam.
- Skirt length + from 0.5 to 1 per turn.
The half-sun pattern is made directly on the fabric.
IMPORTANT! Keep in mind that the waistline can be located at different levels: high, medium, low. The appearance of the doll itself, as well as the style of the skirt, will depend on this.
Accordingly, if necessary, adjust the measurements.
Step-by-step instruction
- Cut out 2 half-sun pieces from fabric, the height of which is equal to the length of the desired skirt. The width corresponds to the waist circumference multiplied by 2.
- For one piece, simply hem the hem. On the other, sew lace along the hem.
- Place the two pieces together and sew them with a wide stitch.
- Form beautiful folds. Attach it to Tilda, straighten the folds again and check the waist size.
- Making a belt. You can use beautiful braid for this purpose.
- Sew the piece to the skirt using a zigzag stitch.
ADVICE! The top cut can be decorated in different ways: from a belt, braid to a lace ribbon.
- Once again we apply it to the doll, with a marker we mark the line along which we will sew. Make sure that the details of the two skirts match each other.
- Finalize the product - cut off excess threads and allowances.
Additional options for finishing the bottom of the skirt
- Finish the hem with binding cut on the bias from the same material as the product itself. Cut it out, sew it on, turn it inside out. Ready.
- Decorate with beads, buttons or bows as desired.
- Use hand crocheted braid. This will give the product an additional handmade style.
- You can use wide lace as a second petticoat.
Useful tips
- Don't forget to add extra allowances to your measurements.
- If you decorated your skirt with rhinestones or beads and fixed them with glue, then it is better not to wash the product.
- If possible, iron the seams, so the sewn items will look neater.
- If you do decide to wash the finished skirt, do it very, very carefully.
- Are there elements of lace, tulle or organza? Add fabric softener when rinsing your skirt.
- Sew beads or sequins onto the finished belt. The product will look much more elegant.
- Choose threads that match the color of the fabric, unless there is a special idea to create a contrast. Do not use dense threads; when they are removed, holes will remain on the finished product.
- On very small skirts, use Velcro instead of buttons.
- Choose simple materials for work, such as cotton, calico; they are easy to handle. Satin, silk, chiffon - fabrics are very slippery.Only professional seamstresses can cope with them, and even when making small things. Finishing the edges will also be difficult.
As you already understand, making a skirt with your own hands is not at all difficult.
Sew yourself, sew with your daughter, because time spent together is very precious and valuable.
