A taffeta skirt is a model that is particularly full. Suitable for adult women, although this model is mainly worn by girls. And a skirt made of tulle or taffeta is very often used as an independent model or as part of a dress for girls. Despite the elegance and solemnity, sewing such a product is very simple, and to find out how to do it, you should read this article.
What is needed to make a skirt with your own hands?
Before you start sewing a skirt, you need to decide on its style. Although these taffeta products are usually full, medium French or maxi length, their fullness may vary slightly. Depending on this, a different amount of fabric will be required..
- The first step is selecting a pattern and calculating the amount of material required, in accordance with the measurements taken.
- After this, fabric is purchased and threads matched to it. This is an important condition for the seams of the product to look as discreet as possible, that is, to merge with the main tone of the fabric.
- In some cases a petticoat may be necessary, although in most cases this model does not require one. If the model is created for a girl, then tulle can serve as a petticoat. Moreover, it is placed in several layers in order to give the taffeta skirt greater pomp.
Features of the taffeta material and its tailoring
Taffeta is a noble fabric with an iridescent sheen. In terms of its composition, it can be either natural (silk, cotton) or made from artificial materials, for example, synthetic viscose or acetate.
The mechanical properties of the fabric are rigid, so it holds its shape well and fits into folds.
Important! Taffeta, especially those made from natural fibers, can shrink significantly when washed - up to 10%. Therefore, this must be taken into account when calculating the material for sewing.
Technology for sewing a taffeta skirt for girls
All the parameters that should be taken from the figure are the waist size and the length of the product. Next, a pattern is made on paper, in accordance with the body parameters taken. A paper pattern is cut out and transferred to the fabric.
It is advisable to draw contour lines with special crayons or thin soap remnants and always on the wrong side of the fabric. This will avoid marks. Don't forget to allow seam allowances when cutting.
Sewing technology for a simple flared skirt:
- The taffeta is cut in such a way that it becomes a circle. It could be one detail - if the girl is small, and if the child is older, then you can make it from two halves;
- the inner diameter of the circle should correspond to the diameter (circumference) of the waist;
- the side seam of the skirt is sewn so as to leave space for the fastener;
- then you need to sew a short zipper into the seam;
- make a petticoat from tulle. It must first be cut so that its length is 2 cm shorter than the length of the taffeta skirt;
- then, along the upper edge, lay the lines in such a way that they can later be pulled together to the size of the waist;
- the fullness of the skirt will depend on the number of layers of tulle;
- cut out the belt, longer than the waist to accommodate the clasp;
- Next, we sew the belt to the product along with the lining. To do this, the lining is placed inside the skirt so that its wrong side is on the wrong side of the taffeta;
- we combine the zipper with the place where the edges of the tulle meet;
- then we prepare the belt and sew it together with the skirt and tulle. After completing this step, all you need to do is fold the edge of the taffeta skirt. This can be done manually using a special hem stitch;
- if you are not sure that it will turn out neatly, then you can hem the edge of the taffeta to the edge of the tulle and smooth the bottom of the product.
This skirt is very simple and easy to make. But it looks quite solemn and elegant.
