Femininity in winter

Every year, as summer turns to autumn, we look forward to updating our wardrobe. Don't get us wrong! We love the easy, carefree fashion that comes with warm weather, but the cool, crisp fall air gives us so many options. However, as fall turns to winter and layering becomes a must, we quickly begin to run out of cute cold-weather outfits. If you feel the same way, these winter clothing tips will make your life (and your appearance) much better.

Guess what? Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean we should collectively give up on style—it does mean we need to think more creatively when dressing in the morning.Layering is a must, so don't ditch fancy jackets for heavy coats until it's absolutely necessary; just buy them a size up so you can layer a sweater or puffer vest underneath! Or pair them with cute pieces that also provide warmth, like faux fur scarves or heat-trapping hats.

Even the darkest days of winter can create great style if you're prepared. Here are some of our best tips and tricks for dressing when it's cold outside. Embrace your inner snow queen and become the winter fashionista you were born to be! But seriously, stay warm.

How to dress feminine in winter

Become a layering pro

There's a reason why layering is always trendy in winter: it's a very practical way to dress when it's very cold. Don't be afraid to layer and don't worry about them ruining your look. The key is to find pieces that you can discreetly layer under more fashionable items to stay warm and still look attractive.

Tip number one is to invest in an ultra-thin, lightweight down jacket or vest from Uniqlo that can be layered over sweaters and under jackets for an extra layer of warmth. Ask any girl who's ever stepped out during Fashion Week in February—she's got a Uniqlo puffer jacket hidden under a chic, street-style-worthy coat.

Let your boots shine

Great winter style comes down to a good pair of boots. Do you have some great over-the-knee boots? Show them off by pairing them with a short dress and patterned tights. Do you have killer ankle boots for the whole world to see? Wear them with cuffed jeans in a chunky knit.

While you definitely need a few practical pairs for winter, make sure you have at least one “fun” pair of boots in your wardrobe.

Tie a belt on your coat to breathe new life into it

By mid-winter, you'll inevitably start to feel a little tired of having to wear a boring old winter coat day after day. Add new life to your coat by simply belting it. Zipping the belt will not only highlight your silhouette, but will also make it look like you have a brand new coat.

Best news of all: This trick works with just about any coat style—we've even seen some serious fashionistas belting their puffer jackets! If you need to start with something more secure, choose a coat with hidden buttons and choose a belt in a similar color. While bold fashionistas may prefer a little contrast, a monochrome approach is just as good.

Adopt faux fur

There aren't many positives about living in very cold weather fashion-wise, but it's the only time of the year you can wear fur (faux fur, of course). So just have fun with it! You can wear fur with almost anything to give your outfit a luxurious look. If you're intimidated by a fur coat, opt for fur mittens, a fur scarf, or a hat with a fluffy pom-pom.
