Vests

Based on the standard definition, a vest is a sleeveless outerwear. Once upon a time it was exclusively an integral part of a men's three-piece suit, but over time the attitude towards this wardrobe item has changed. Nowadays, it is a stylish element of a variety of looks: both men’s and women’s.

Story

The world knows three versions of the origin of the vest. Supporters of the first consider its homeland to be France, where the comedian “bungler Gilles” lived and worked in the 17th century. The clown's calling card—clothes with haphazardly torn sleeves—was a clear irony to the camisole that was fashionable at that time.

The second version says that the vest was first sewn by a tailor named Gilet. Thus, the memory of the author was immortalized in his creation. A beautiful legend, but it is impossible to prove the reality of this historical fact today.

According to the third assumption, this item of clothing came to us from the Arabs, who wore a “zhelek” - a special sleeveless vest.

The Great French Revolution is the period when the vest became especially popular. At the end of the 18th century, the British wore it as everyday clothing.

It is noteworthy that in Russia at the end of the 18th century it was forbidden to wear a vest, since it was believed that it was thanks to it that the revolution took place in France. At that time, we rightfully feared such unrest, because only in the 19th century were Russian fashionistas able to wear this elegant piece of clothing.

Kinds

Of course, it is difficult to strictly divide all the models into certain groups: these clothes are too diverse these days. However, conditional gradation is possible. For example, all models differ in the material they are made of.

Thus, there are fabric vests that are made from classic suit materials, knitwear, denim, wool, fleece, etc.

modern vests

There are models made of leather (most often sheepskin), dermantine, suede, fur (artificial and natural). This is a warm, practical outerwear that protects from bad weather. In addition, other demi-season and winter options are popular - unique sleeveless jackets. In such vests, insulation is important, which these days is increasingly made synthetic.

The cut is also different. The following vests are especially common:

  1. Classic - an option for a business suit.
  2. With a hood. Most often these are sports models that are fastened with a zipper.
  3. Elongated. In the standard version it covers the hips, but there are models up to the knee and below.
  4. Shortened, or bolero. This is a women's model that can be combined with a dress or blouse. At the same time, a bolero with sleeves is a jacket; only the version without sleeves is classified as a vest.

The styles of women's vests are varied. The color range is also rich: there are interesting models with animal or floral prints, striped, checkered, polka dot and many others. Monochromatic options also look chic, which are especially suitable for creating classic ensembles with a skirt, dress, or trousers.

men's vests

Male models are most often calm and reserved. Their colors are not so bright, and the style is more familiar: standard length, buttons or zipper as a fastener, straight cut.

A vest made of wool, knitted by hand, looks unusual. This model is especially appreciated by lovers of exclusive items.
