The vest has been in the women's wardrobe for quite some time and, most likely, for a long time. After all, such a piece of clothing will highlight both a business suit and a casual outfit. A knitted vest will also keep you warm during the cold season.
New models of knitted vests
Modern fashion offers us a huge number of varieties of this wardrobe item: from ordinary fitted short vests to elongated, sleeveless coat-like options. A skillfully selected vest will definitely highlight the advantages and brighten up some of the shortcomings of every woman.
And of course, I’m very pleased with the fact that the vest is not a complex product. So, dear needlewomen, you can knit almost any model yourself.
For summer, for example, airy crocheted lace vests made from cotton or linen yarn are perfect.
An option for the colder season would be products made from natural or artificial wool, which are usually knitted.
Choosing a model and material of a knitted vest
It is worth noting that a large number of models of women's knitted vests have not lost their relevance in the new fashion season. Moreover, recently such products have become popular among young people, largely due to the fact that designers have again turned to these imperishable elements of women's clothing in their collections.
Reference! A vest is a product whose main feature is the absence of long sleeves. The neckline can be of various shapes; the front of the vest is either made of solid fabric or has various fasteners.
The materials for knitting a vest can be any; their choice depends on the specific model and the time of year in which the product is planned to be worn.
The following fashionable models receive special attention:
- elongated tunic vests (especially relevant for obese women);
- raglan vests;
- mohair vests;
- vests with imitation fur;
- jacquard vests.
Of course, when choosing a vest model, you should take into account your body shape. For example, for slender women, knitted items with a voluminous pattern, or using decorative elements such as a fur ribbon or knitting with imitation fur, are well suited. For those with curvy figures, elongated options and vests made of mohair (fine knit) are more suitable. Raglan vests will be good for any figure, because they visually reduce the shoulders and emphasize the chest.
Knitting a vest for a woman with knitting needles
Even a novice needlewoman can knit a vest with knitting needles, because this product often has only two parts - the back and the front.But in a hand-knitted item, both the yarn and the satisfaction from the effort put into the work are warm.
We present to your attention long vest tunic for obese women. Under such an item of clothing you can wear a turtleneck, a long-sleeve sweater, or an office shirt.
Knitting stages
Here's a description for sizes 48/50 and 54/56.
For knitting you will need:
- natural wool yarn (preferably merino with a skein weight of 50g and a thread length of 120 m) in the amount of 750–850 g;
- straight knitting needles No. 3,5 and 4;
- circular knitting needles No. 3.5.
Knitting elements:
The elastic band is knitted according to the pattern “1 purl loop (IP) + 2 knit loops (RL) + 1IP” and repeats until the end of the row.
In the pattern, the number of loops is a multiple of “12+1”; you should also take into account 2 edge loops (KP). Diagram 1 shows the structure of the pattern; on the wrong side the fabric is knitted according to the pattern, and the loops obtained from the front side using a yarn over are knitted with an IP. The pattern is knitted according to the pattern: 1KP + loops before rapport (P) + repeat P loops + loops after R + 1KP. We repeat knitting from rows 1 to 36.
Scheme 1 – Pattern, openwork pattern diagram and symbols
The openwork is knitted on straight needles number 4 with a fabric density of 20.5 stitches for 29 rows (10 cm * 10 cm).
Back
We dial 130–142p. on straight knitting needles No. 3.5. We knit an elastic band 15 cm long, adding 5 stitches evenly in the last row. (we get 135–147p.). Then on needles No. 4 we knit a pattern according to the above pattern. Having knitted 60–63 cm from the end of the elastic, we decrease the details symmetrically on the sides:
– for size 48/50 – 1*9p., then in every second row 2*10p., after that 1*8p.;
– for size 54/56 – 1*10p., then in every second row 2*12p., after that 1*9p.
At the same time, for the neckline we will close 31 stitches in the middle.After this, the two parts are knitted separately, 3*5 stitches are closed from the center in every second row. All loops will be closed after knitting 63–66 cm from the elastic band.
Before
Knitted similarly to the back. The only difference is that the neckline is deeper: after 55–58 cm from the end of the elastic, 23 stitches are closed. in the middle, then decrease loops at the neck in every second row in this order: 2*4p., 1*3p., 1*2p., 6*1p.
Assembly
We sew the side and shoulder seams, the side seams remain 23–25 cm open at the top for the armholes. At the neckline we cast on 152 sts on circular knitting needles, after which we knit a 12 cm elastic band. The loops are closed according to the picture.
We cast on 82 loops on both sides for the armholes and knit 12 cm of elastic. We turn the elastic bands in half inward and sew them on.

Products made from mohair will never lose their relevance. After all, this material is very soft, warm and fluffy. A mohair vest will perfectly complement a romantic look or emphasize the femininity of a business lady.
