How to determine the size of boxing gloves: a universal method for men and women
Boxing gloves - This is not an accessory, but in fact the main part of a professional boxer’s equipment. Their main function – protection of the athlete’s hands from all kinds of damage both during training and in sparring and fights. This is why it is so important to choose the right size gloves.
Incorrectly selected equipment is not only inconvenient to use, but can also lead to injuries and damage to muscles, joints and bone tissue.
In order to correctly determine the size, there is a special method that is suitable for both men, women and teenagers.
To find out the size of boxing gloves required for an athlete or sportswoman, you will need a measuring tape, like those used by seamstresses and cutters. To take measurements using tape you will need:
- Measure the circumference of your palm by holding the tip of the tape near your thumb.At the same time, the thumb itself should not fall into the girth of the tape, otherwise the entire measuring process will be organized incorrectly;
- convert the result into inches (you can do this by dividing the number by 2.54);
- round the result either to a whole number or to a whole number and one half;
- the resulting number will be equal to the size.
The circumference of the palm is 18 centimeters. Converting 18 cm to inches gives 7.08. Rounding to the nearest whole number, we get 7.

There is also a “letter” correspondence between sizes in centimeters and inches. In order to understand which international size standard a particular value corresponds to, it is suggested that you familiarize yourself with the table below.
This table will come in handy in cases where the manufacturer of the product indicated its size not in inches, but according to international standards.
Which sizes are for children and which for adults?
In addition to the confusion between inches, centimeters and “letters,” a novice athlete when choosing boxing equipment can also be confused by the dimensions indicated in ounces. In general, the classification of gloves by ounce looks something like this:
- 4 oz: children's equipment, lightweight and suitable for children up to 6 years old;
- 6 oz: still children's equipment for young boxers under 9 years of age;
- 8 oz: youth “equipment”, perfect for teenagers under 14 years old, if the child weighs less than 60 kilograms;
- 10 oz: intended for athletes weighing from 50 to 65 kilograms;
- If the boxer’s weight is around 65–75 kg, then 12 ounce gloves are perfect for him;
- In the next weight category up to 90 kilograms, 14 ounce models are recommended for athletes;
- Athletes from 200 to 100 pounds typically wear 16-ounce gloves;
- Gloves ranging from 18 to 20 ounces are typically worn by heavyweights over a hundredweight.
You should try on gloves only with one or two layers of bandage wrapped around them.
This weight classification is generally universal for both beginners and professional athletes. Another thing is what type of gloves are used. Basically, the sporting goods market has four types of gloves:
- professional. They are performed both individually, tailored to the anatomical features of the athlete’s hand, and en masse in factories. They are usually fixed with lacing;
- training. Used both for sparring and non-professional competitions. Can be fixed with either lacing or Velcro;
- projectile. Bulk gloves that do not have a clear shape are intended exclusively for working with bags. Fixed with Velcro or elastic bands;
- paws. Used only for working with a trainer and practicing movements.
