Types of boxing gloves

Boxing gloves are the main element of equipment for a boxer, professional and amateur, experienced and beginner. For comfortable and safe training and competitions, it is important to select them correctly.

Reference! Already the ancient Greek pankration fighters put on their hands something similar to the modern version of gloves.

Boxing gloves: what types are there?

Since the first half of the last century, boxing equipment has acquired its current appearance. Various modifications of it appeared.

Important! Do not confuse sparring “paws” with gloves - they belong to the category of projectiles.

Amateur

sparringThey are easy to distinguish by color (there are only red or blue ones - in others they will not be allowed to compete) and along the white circle on the striking side. Always lighter than training gloves (about 10 ounces). Their shape can be different, they are attached with both laces and Velcro. One thing remains common to all options - the fist in them will not completely clench, which significantly reduces the severity of the blow.

Training

The purpose follows from the name, and the weight and shape can be any, depending on the weight category of the owner. As a rule, they are not too expensive if you take a pair made of artificial leather (there are also natural ones). Of all the boxing shoes, the most budget-friendly. They should be quite heavy (at least 16 ounces): this will help soften the blow, protect yourself from injury and not injure your partner.

Important! The main property of gloves is functionality. Appearance is the last thing you should worry about!

For professionals

They are made for those who take up boxing seriously, with full-contact hard fights, so this type of equipment is the most durable and reliable. They are made using only natural leather and filling. The weight of such a glove ranges from 6 to 12 ounces, which depends on:

  • for professionalsathlete's weight category;
  • fight class.
  • The blow in such a model will be softened to a minimum, although the boxer’s hands will be protected.

Projectile

This is another type of training gloves that are not intended for sparring - they are used to train on a punching bag. Their difference is in the density of the outer side in comparison with the inner. The “equipment” is lighter than the usual training version (moreover, they often have more durable material) and leave the opportunity to clench your fingers into a fist.

Universal

These boxing shorts are created on the “two in one” principle - they are used both for training and for equipment. Of course, increased load will quickly render them unusable. Special requirements are for the shock-absorbing properties of the padding, which must be:

  • durable;
  • maintaining a sense of contact during impacts;
  • not too hard.

Important! Even a novice athlete will not be able to do without two (or better yet, three) pairs of boxing shoes.For example, you can match the universal ones with projectile ones.

With weights

They are a type of training option, but with adaptations for development:

  • everlastspeed;
  • endurance.

These boxers are used when necessary to increase the intensity of training. Weights attached to the cuffs can reach 2 kg. By removing them, you can get a regular training option.

Combat

They are designed to withstand strong impacts, so when manufacturing them, the angle of the thumb is taken into account. Precise adherence to anatomy allows you to create equipment in which strong blows will be delivered.

Types of gloves according to the method of fastening on the wrists

The type of fixation is another basis for classification.

With lace

without fingersAs a rule, a lace-up model is a sign of a high-class athlete. It’s impossible to put them on yourself, but they will fit tightly in your wrists. Combat models for big sports are always laced!

With Velcro

Most often purchased by beginners as they are easy to use. More experienced boxers do not neglect them either. You can put on and take off this model without outside help, which is very convenient.

Important! Bandages are required with gloves - both to minimize injuries and to extend the life of the equipment. You also need to try on boxing shorts on them - otherwise there is a risk that your hand in bandages will not fit into the glove. Please also note that there is a strip of fabric inside the product between the thumb and other fingers - it is needed to protect the thumb.

According to the age

Finally, there is a classification based on gender and age. The model for men will differ from the women's one, and the adult version will differ from the children's version.

Men's

men'sThey are classic equipment for martial arts, performed in different forms, depending on the purpose.

Women's

In addition to the understandable difference in size and weight, they also differ in anatomical shape, taking into account the structure of the female hand.

Important! It is not recommended for a sports lady to take a children's model instead of a women's model!

Children's

Options designed for children will be smaller and lighter. They are also equipped with increased protective properties. There are also teenage gloves for athletes under 18 years of age.
