The christening of a baby is a great sacrament, which is a great event for believing family members. But for the guests of the holiday and the godparents of the child, this becomes a real test, as they have to rack their brains over a suitable gift. Many people prefer to stick with banal gifts, while others try to choose a unique item that will not only be an excellent christening gift, but will also come in handy in the future.
What gifts are appropriate for a christening?
There are no special canons about what is customary to give for such an event. Although there is a certain list of so-called “traditional” gifts that are most often given to the baby:
- silver spoon and glass;
- guardian angel icon;
- clothing for the sacrament;
- an embroidered pouch for storing locks of baby's hair;
- cross;
- children's bible;
- kryzhma (a blanket in which the child is wrapped after immersion in the font).
This list is optional.However, many holiday guests try to choose a gift from the list presented so that the baby has everything he needs.
Many guests prefer to give a cash gift or buy a toy for the baby. This is also not prohibited. The main thing is that the gift is really needed and that the child likes it.
What should godparents give their godchildren?
According to tradition, godparents must give the hero of the occasion a pectoral cross and a kryzhma. As a rule, the godfather gives the child a cross. Usually preference is given to a product made of gold or silver, but there are no strict regulations regarding the material.
The godmother usually gives kryzhma. This is a special sheet or piece of fabric in which the baby is wrapped after the bath. You can make it yourself from a piece of light fabric or buy it at a church shop. Embroidered fabrics are welcome.
Also, the godmother can make her own or buy a bag for storing locks of the child’s hair and buy clothes for a special occasion. Church ministers note that gifts made by godparents should accompany the child throughout his life and contribute to spiritual enlightenment. Presents such as an amulet or a personalized icon are suitable.
Should I give something to my parents?
Parents of a baby are not usually given christening gifts. But godparents, who are no less important participants in the sacrament, can be presented with original gifts. The list of acceptable gifts for godparents usually includes:
- a large photograph of the christening participants in the original frame with a signature on the back;
- a festive composition made with your own materials (be sure to follow the theme of the holiday);
- a cast of the godson’s leg or arm, framed in an appropriate frame;
- icons;
- figurines of angels.
The parents of the baby should take care of creating unusual gifts for godparents in advance. It’s best if these are things that are not just memorable, but also desirable.
Gifts from ordinary “guests”
For ordinary guests of an important holiday in a child’s life, there is no specific list of gifts. This can be any thing that the child may need. The list of the most popular ones includes:
- toys;
- books;
- cloth;
- bedding and household items.
Having no idea what to give your child for a holiday, you can limit yourself to a memorable card in which a certain amount of money is invested. The baby's parents will always be able to choose something to their liking and buy the right thing for their child.
Various treats that guests can bring for the festive feast are also welcome. The food will always be “at home” and will be received favorably.
