It's not always easy to part with old things. Has your favorite blanket become old and has scuffs and holes in its surface? And still it’s a pity to give it up? This is not surprising: we spend a third of our lives with him! So what to do? Do not throw it away under any circumstances! It is much more interesting to change his fate.
Turning an old blanket into a new one
See how you can put an old product to good use.
With your own hands
Try updating your textiles yourself. This will make your bedroom original, and your friends will admire your “golden hands”!
To you you will need fabric for covering. This can be a cut that suits your preferences. But be careful: the size must match your aged item!
- Take measurements for length and width.
- Multiply the length by two, add 2 cm to the resulting measurements for the seams. You should end up with a rectangular duvet cover with a side hole. Half the job is done!
Advice. You don’t have to choose the fabric, but use a ready-made duvet cover.
- Tuck the old item into a homemade duvet cover and sew up the side opening.
- All that remains is to quilt the fabric so that the product does not move inside the duvet cover. It's obvious that The more stitches there are, the better the quality will be. product!
Professional restoration
If the needlework doesn’t work out, take the bedspread to a dry cleaner or to a home textile sewing and restoration studio.
Restoration of down and wool products is different. In the first case, workers clean the filling (down and/or feather), cut and prepare the cover, and fill it. And in the second, they wash and dry the textiles, clean them of dirt and comb them out, cut out the covers, and lay out the wool.
The cost depends on the size:
- children's (90x120) - about 1600 rubles;
- one and a half (150x200) - 2000–2500 rubles;
- double (180x200) - 3000 rubles.
An old blanket turns...
But the role of a warm product can be changed. Let's talk about possible transformations.
...in clothes and accessories
Clothes made from a bedspread? Why not!
Coat
Every morning in someone’s bedroom you hear “I don’t feel like getting dressed! I wish I could travel in a blanket!” And the Estonian designer Marit Ilison suggested coat collection, sewn from old Soviet bedspreads.
Reference! The original name of the collection is “Kaamos” - literally translated “I want to sleep”, in honor of the story of the same name by A.P. Chekhov.
The colors, familiar to every Soviet person, and the velvety structure of the blanket are harmoniously combined with Swarovski rhinestones.
Each coat in the collection is made in a single copy, handmade by Marit Ilison herself and by skilled seamstresses. And one of the products is Marit’s grandmother’s former bedspread, under which the designer herself slept as a child.
You can certainly use the phrase “I went to work in a blanket today” in the literal sense!
Bag
In addition to outerwear, you can make a wonderful accessory from an old bedspread: a bag for traveling or for going to the grocery store.
It's simple: cut out a rectangle and attach handles. We know for sure that you will not encounter a person with the same bag!
...in home textiles
The ways you can use an old product are limited only by your imagination! Here are some simple ideas to get you started.
Dog toy
Take an old blanket, cut it into several neat strips and braid it into a large braid. This will save you a significant amount of money at the veterinary store!
Pet bed
Another alternative option. The bed is suitable for dogs, and if you build a secluded place (for example, with a roof), then, of course, cats will also like it.
Wigwam
Who hasn't built children's houses out of chairs and blankets! Choose a product of a suitable color, make the base from stable wooden planks. Now build a real home for little dreamers!
Children will be happy to help build the wigwam and spend many exciting hours inside!
Bedspread like grandma's
An old Soviet blanket can be turned into a patchwork style blanket (literally translated as “Product made from patches”). We offer the easiest way to make a bright little thing.
- Cut the blanket with different patterns into 8x8 cm squares, with a 5 mm allowance.
- Choose the shape of the future product and arrange the squares by color.
- Sew into blocks and join using plain stripes.
- Place the finished product in a vacuum bag and store until the warm season. Perfect for a picnic with loved ones!
Sleeping bag
Do you like to travel? You can make a sleeping bag from an old bedspread. You just need to buy a zipper.
If the ideas seem complicated to you, still don’t rush to throw away your favorite blanket. You will definitely get seats for outdoor furniture or covers for it! You can also use it as packing when moving. Wrap furniture and secure with clear film. The blanket will protect against scratches and allow you to maintain its original appearance.
