How to iron a sheet with an elastic band correctly?

Recently, in bedding sets, you can increasingly often find a sheet with an elastic band. Gathered at the corners, and sometimes along the entire perimeter, it is put on the edges of the mattress, secures well, does not come out from under it and does not wrinkle during sleep. However, it is more difficult to stroke than the usual rectangular “big sister”.

What should you pay attention to?

New bedding, especially those made from durable materials such as calico, linen and thick cotton, do not iron out well. There are several nuances that, if observed, can greatly facilitate the process. Recommended:

  • Use conditioner when washing. It softens the material and reduces the number of folds and creases;
  • immediately after rinsing and spinning, shake the sheet well and hang it flat to dry;
  • Do not dry completely - slightly damp laundry is easier to iron. If it is still dry, you will have to use the steam function while ironing.If you don’t have one (for example, an old model iron), you will need additionally moisten the sheet with a spray bottle;
  • use an ironing board, which should be installed at an optimal height that is comfortable for the ironer;
  • wash the floor thoroughly so as not to “collect” all the dust from it with clean linen;
  • make sure that the lighting in the room is sufficient;
  • observe the heating temperature of the iron for each specific type of fabric;
  • Observe precautions: do not leave a hot electrical appliance on the material.

How to iron a sheet with an elastic band

The main inconvenience is that the sheet is a rather voluminous product, both in length and width. In addition, its edges are pulled together and it is impossible to straighten them completely. That's why To achieve the desired effect, you must follow a certain sequence of actions.

Step by step ironing process

There are several methods for ironing a sheet with an elastic band. Some take more time, others less, but all require some skill and perhaps additional equipment, such as an extension cord.

Fold

Since the area of the ironed surface is quite impressive, it is advisable to fold the product. To do this you need:

  • take the sheet by the adjacent edges with the wrong side facing you so that its long sides were located horizontally, and its short sides were located vertically;
  • put your hands under the elastic at the corners;
  • connect and insert one edge of the product into the other so that the corner seams match;
  • do the same with the opposite side;
  • Fold the sheet again, bringing all four corners together;
  • straighten all layers thoroughly.

step by step

Iron in a circle

A sheet folded in four must be placed on an ironing board. You can start ironing it:

  • from the center to the edges. In this case, attention is first paid to the even angle, and to all layers accessible to the iron. Then the perimeter is processed: the elastic band is pulled over the rounded part of the board, the fabric is pulled and straightened with one hand, and steamed with the other (using an electric device);
  • from the edges to the center. This is the opposite option: first, the places farthest from the center are smoothed in a circle, then the middle.

After both accessible surfaces have been ironed, you can unfold the product, separating one pair of corners from the other. After this it is recommended fold it differently, combining the already processed layers and exposing those that were inside. Repeat all manipulations first with the second half of the sheet.

Of course, this method cannot be called operational, but you can be sure that not a single microbe or wrinkle remains on the fabric. Therefore, nothing will interfere with a restful and sound sleep. This is especially true when it comes to a child’s bedding.

ironed sheets

Fast way

If you don’t want to get involved with a long and painstaking procedure or you simply don’t have time for it, you can speed up the process. To do this, wash and dry the sheet must be pulled over the mattress and all folds smoothed out directly on the sleeping area.

Attention! In this case, most likely, you will have to use an ordinary carrier, or better yet, a surge protector. The temperature of the iron and the power consumption of this device are quite high, so having a fuse will help prevent overloading the electrical network in the event of any malfunction.

Certainly, with this method, only the central part will be ironed, and creases will remain at the very ends (closer to the elastic band). But this, firstly, will be practically unnoticeable, and secondly, will not affect a person’s comfort in any way, since the body practically does not come into contact with the side parts of the mattress.

stack of sheets

Is it possible to do it without ironing?

It all depends on the quality of the material, the needs and habits of each individual person. You can do without steaming if the sheet is made from:

  • terry cloth;
  • percales;
  • polycotton;
  • poplin;
  • microfiber;
  • headers

These materials are characterized by relative softness and low creasing.

Some people love the smell of freshness that is lost when ironing, so they avoid this procedure. There are some individuals who don’t care whether the laundry is ironed or not. Apparently it doesn't affect their sleep at all.

By the way! Unlike the Eastern Slavs, Western Europeans wash and iron bedding less often. This is due, first of all, to high tariffs for utilities: water supply and electricity. To keep their laundry (or at least look) fresh longer, they prefer non-staining colors (for example, blue or gray tones) and almost always sleep in pajamas.

From a hygiene point of view, It is necessary to wash and iron the sheets and pillowcase at least once a week, and the duvet cover - once every two weeks. In addition, well-ironed linen looks more attractive and tidy, becomes soft and pleasant to the touch. Thus, a carefully ironed sheet with an elastic band can be an excellent help in creating a comfortable sleeping place for each family member.
