How to sew a scented pillowcase?

Making your own bedding is easy. Let's take at least a pillowcase. Not a lot of fabric will be needed for such a product, and the cutting and sewing are so clear that even a novice craftswoman can handle them. The most common option is a scented pillowcase. In this article we will tell you how to properly sew this bedding.

How to calculate fabric consumption

The size of a standard pillow is 47*66 cm. This means that the width of one side of the pillowcase will be 50 cm, and the length will be 70 cm. You also need allowances for seams (2.5 cm on each edge) and 25 cm for the smell (also called valve). If you are buying fabric just for a pillowcase, it is better to buy a little more. If you cut or cut something wrong, you will have a chance to quickly correct the situation.

Thus, to sew one wrap pillowcase, you can buy a piece of fabric measuring two by one meter. Even if there are leftovers, it’s okay: you can use them to make kitchen towels.

Pattern

Before you start cutting, a piece of fabric should be washed in warm water and soap, dried and ironed. After this, the canvas is laid out on a flat surface and a rectangle is drawn with sides of 170 cm (2 halves of the product, valve and seams) and 53 cm (including allowance). Don't forget to mark the fold lines: in half without taking into account the smell and the smell itself. If you are sewing for the first time, it is better to draw them with a pencil on the fabric.

By the way! It is better to make a pattern on graph paper and then transfer it to fabric. If this is not possible, you can first draw a small copy on a regular notebook sheet in a checkered pattern, and then make a pattern on the fabric.

Pattern

How to sew: step by step instructions

The finished pattern is laid out on a flat surface, the machine is threaded and a test stitch is made on an unnecessary piece of the same fabric from which the pillowcase will be sewn. If the stitches are smooth and the thread is not overtightened, you can begin the main work.

The algorithm is as follows:

  1. At the edges along the width we make double folds - 2 cm each. We flash them.
  2. Fold the blank in half (along the line drawn in the middle of the pillowcase) and in the place of the future smell. To make sewing more convenient, the folds can be ironed with a hot iron.
  3. You should get a blank, one edge of which is the future valve (lying below), and the second is a pillowcase (on top of the smell).
  4. In this position, we secure the sides with needles or sweep them away. We make machine stitches, remove the needles/basting and turn the almost finished product inside out. The valve should be on the outside.
  5. We secure the flap and stitch the sides again.
  6. Turn the pillowcase right side out. Job is done.

After the pillowcase is sewn, do not rush to try it on the pillow. First, iron again, paying special attention to seams and corners. This way it will look more neat.

What else should you consider when sewing a scented pillowcase?

Despite its obvious simplicity, such work has many nuances. For example, it is important to consider the texture of the fabric. For the first time, you can use chintz. It's cheap and easy to use. The only negative is its fragility.

You can sew a pillowcase from calico or poplin. These materials are more expensive, but also easy to use. A product made from them will last much longer.

The most chic thing is a pillowcase made of natural silk. It is useful for anyone who cares about skin health to sleep on it. After sleeping on smooth silk, you will not see the characteristic creases and bruises on your face. One “but” - silk is very expensive.

There are other points to pay attention to:

  1. You can sew a pillowcase with clasps. In this case, loops are made on the valve, and buttons are sewn to the edge of the main part. Another option is buttons. Sewing such a product will take a little more time, but it is more convenient to use.
  2. Avoid synthetic fabrics. They can cause irritation on the face, and sleeping on a synthetic bed is unpleasant.
  3. The sewing method discussed in the article is universal. Size matters. If the pillow is not square, but rectangular, you can simply change the size of the pattern to fit it.
