Style Description

Patchwork is a sewing style that came to us from England. Literally translated, this word means “sewing from scraps of different colors.” And it characterizes this performance as fully as possible.

For the first time, things were sewn from leftover fabrics for reasons of economy. A little later, when the craftswomen realized how beautiful and original such products looked, they began to produce cute and cozy things from pieces of fabric, especially on purpose.

Experienced craftswomen note that patchwork is a very complex sewing style that requires a lot of attention and painstaking work from the craftswoman. But upon completion of the work, truly original models of bedspreads, baby blankets, skillfully sewn napkins and other products for creating comfort in the home come out from under the seamstress’s needle.

Necessary materials

It is noteworthy that patchwork is an accessible sewing style. If desired, any craftswoman, even a beginner, can sew a beautiful bedspread. To get started you will need a little:

  • sewing machine;
  • a set of fabric scraps;
  • fabric for the reverse side of the product (usually this is a single piece of fabric, for a bedspread approximately 1.5 x 2 m);
  • needles, sewing pins;
  • threads in the color of the selected fabric;
  • tailor's scissors.

Important! Experienced craftswomen advise taking scraps of approximately the same texture and density, and also comparing the thickness. In this case, the product will look harmonious.

Don't diversify your choice too much. 6-7 different shades, combined with each other, will be enough. Some seamstresses choose one main color and complement it with several other shades.

Main stages of work

From the point of view of the complexity of the process, sewing in patchwork style is not a problem. Even a beginning craftswoman can use this technique. A little time and patience, and the result will be excellent. A cozy, stylish bedspread will decorate a room in the house.

Conventionally, the entire sewing process can be divided into three main stages:

  • selection of fabric (here you can use the already existing arsenal of material cuts that were used in previous works or specially purchase fabrics for the bedspread);
  • creating a sketch (depending on their experience, craftswomen prefer to create their own drawings and graphics or use ready-made ones);
  • sewing flaps together to create a single fabric.

There are several types of stitching of flaps, thanks to which the seamstress can achieve an original ornament or geometric pattern. For beginning craftswomen, experts advise choosing the simplest possible patterns that do not require complex drawing up and presentation of a diagram of the future product.

Step by step guide

Having chosen a scheme and purchased the necessary materials, you can begin to work.To begin with, it is recommended to lay out all the pieces of fabric on a clean floor in the exact order in which they will be located on the finished product.

The first two pieces are lifted, placing them right sides together and sewn together on a machine, leaving a small allowance of half a centimeter. Also, two more pairs of flaps are sewn together on a machine, and then combined into a single ribbon of 6 squares or strips of fabric.

Important! Each resulting ribbon must be carefully ironed, leveling the allowances.

Next, a layer of insulation is hemmed. To do this, take a suitable material, for example, synthetic winterizer. It should be slightly larger in size than the resulting patchwork fabric. Then it is laid out on the wrong side of the bedspread and sewn along the seams.

After this, you also need to sew on the bottom fabric. Usually this is a solid canvas that matches the color of the product. It is sewn on a machine using pre-prepared seams. The result of this style of sewing is a stylish, cozy, and most importantly, one-of-a-kind bedspread. At the same time, the owner’s soul will regularly rejoice that her favorite thing was truly made with love and gives happiness.
