We spend almost a third of our lives in bed. And for a good night’s sleep, it is very important that the linen laid on the bed is convenient, comfortable, hygienic and correctly selected in size.
What is a bed sheet
It would seem, what problems may arise with the choice of sheets – a rectangular piece of fabric laid over a sleeping area on top of a mattress. But even in this matter, there are small nuances that should be taken into account when choosing this type of bedding.
The stores will offer you a varied selection of underwear, different by color, size, quality of material. So decide in advance, what exactly you need and go shopping fully armed.
What types and sizes of sheets are there?
Depending on the size of the mattress, you should choose a sheet:
- single;
- one and a half;
- double;
- Euro;
- Euro-maxi;
- family.
All these names are conditional, and manufacturers currently allow themselves to deviate from the standards in one direction or another by 10-15 cm. So look not only at the size mark on the price tag, but also at the specific numbers of length and width indicated on the product label. Knowing the size of the mattress, you can easily choose the right size sheet for yourself.
The sheet is the only piece of bed linen, where the principle applies: the bigger, the better. It’s not bad when its sheet exceeds the size of the mattress by 20-30 cm or even more. After all, the wider the sheet, the greater the smell under the mattress and the less likely it is that it will wrinkle and slide off during sleep.
Single products usually do not differ much in size or differ insignificantly from one and a half and teenage. So if a person sleeps alone, you can safely buy a lorry.
Doubles are intended for a husband and wife or one very pampered person. The width of double sheets varies from 175 to 210 cm. If you sleep on a sofa, then the first option is suitable, if on a wide bed, then look for a wider sheet on sale.
Beds are also now available in different sizes. Those with a wide royal bed should look for family sheets that are 240-260cm wide. This is, in fact, already three-bedroom bed linen.
A separate category includes sheets with an elastic band, which sit tightly on the mattress and never slip or wrinkle during sleep. When choosing such bedding, you should take into account not only the length and width of the mattress, but also its height so that the sheet fits perfectly on it. Those who sleep on the sofa cannot dream of such a sheet, being content with an ordinary sheet.
During the winter months, you can use an electrically heated sheet, so as not to heat the bed yourself, but to lie down in a warm bed. Electric sheets are usually made from cotton or calico, and heating elements are installed inside. In this case, a person can choose the heating mode he needs.
Manufacturers also took care of gourmets, owners of round and oval beds, by releasing bedding in the appropriate shape. The diameter of such non-standard sheets varies from 200 to 250 cm.
There are also sheets that are used instead of blankets in the warm season. They are made from terry or waffle fabric. On particularly hot nights, sleeping people also cover themselves with bamboo sheets and even ordinary cotton sheets.
Popular materials of manufacture
Sheets differ from each other not only in size, but also in the types of fabrics from which they are made.
Cotton. You will find sheets made from this material most often on sale. The product, made from natural textiles, can serve its owners for up to 7 years.
Satin. Natural cotton fiber made by twisting the fibers. Hygroscopic, breathable, hygienic.
Calico. The material is not as soft as satin, because it differs in the technique of weaving the fibers. But it is easy to use and pleasant to the body. The patterns applied to calico will not fade even after numerous washes.
Linen. Natural fabric, which has a bactericidal effect, does not allow fungi and other unpleasant microorganisms to develop. An ideal find for people suffering from allergies. It has a non-smooth surface, which creates a massage effect during sleep. After washing it dries quickly and does not turn yellow from the sun.
Silk. Natural material at an expensive price point. Hypoallergenic and durable. Cools in summer, warms in winter.The only drawback is that it is difficult to iron.
Mahra. Bamboo or cotton fabric, natural and dense. In winter, sleeping on such a sheet is warm and cozy.
Jacquard. Combination of viscose and cotton fibers. And although there are weaves on the fabric, there is no lint on it. Textiles are durable and environmentally friendly, but the price is not always affordable for ordinary people.
Poplin. Mix of viscose, silk and cotton. A big plus of such a sheet is that it practically does not wrinkle. In addition to the fact that it does not wear out for a long time, it is easy to care for - poplin does not need ironing.
Percale. Dense and durable knitted fabric is tightly hygroscopic and allows you to spend the night with maximum comfort. Widely used by people prone to allergies.
Bamboo. Environmentally friendly material made from bamboo pulp. Harmful microorganisms will never grow in it. The fabric absorbs moisture well, providing thermoregulation.
Eucalyptus. A sheet made from this exotic fiber will delight you with organic cleanliness and comfort.
Conclusion
Usually a sheet is purchased as a set with other bedding. But if it is torn and only it needs to be replaced, then you can always find a separate copy on sale and even match it as closely as possible in color and texture to the rest of the bedding elements.
