Sewing enthusiasts often have to deal with problems related to the selection and calculation of material, drawing up patterns and drawings, as well as assembling and sewing product fragments together.
Cutting the edge of a fabric evenly is one of the most difficult tasks even for experienced needlewomen. Especially when it comes to thin fabrics such as organza, veil, silk, chiffon, etc.
Thin fabrics have to be cut when sewing curtains, bed linen and decorative garments. The edges of the curtains are trimmed to change the interior or to eliminate defects that have appeared over time during use.
In some cases, you have to straighten the edges of the material yourself due to the negligence of sellers. When purchasing fabric, make sure that the seller carefully measures the length of the piece you need, especially if the fabric is very long.
What is the difficulty in cutting tulle?
Tulle is a very delicate and fragile fabric, so it must be handled with extreme care.If used incorrectly, defects quickly appear on it in the form of vertical or horizontal arrows, puffs and holes.
The difficulty in cutting tulle fabric is that it slides across the surface. If the piece of material is large, it is difficult to fold it in half and join the edges symmetrically. To do this, it is recommended to lay the tulle on a flat, hard surface. Fabric that is too thin is pre-moistened, ironed and hemmed or pinned to paper. This method almost completely eliminates slipping during cutting.
Attention! Do not try to cut fabric by weight. This method will never give smooth edges.
Common ways to cut tulle straight:
By pulling out the cross thread. Instructions
- Place the required length on the fabric and mark with chalk or pencil.
- We make a neat cut on the edge of the material.
- From the edge we pull out the thread that goes along the weft.
- Using scissors or a stationery knife, we cut the canvas along the formed path.
- We get a perfectly even cut of tulle.
This method is considered the most reliable and simple. If you use a utility knife for the job, make sure it is sharp, otherwise you may ruin the fabric. It is necessary to take measurements on a flat surface, carefully laying out and smoothing the material on it. A regular table or bedside table is suitable for this. If the size of the fabric does not fit completely on the table, lay it out on the floor. When cutting, the material must be stationary.
Attention! Do not forget to count on the hem for the curtain tape and the stitching of the bottom edge.
Using fabric cuts. Instructions
- We fold double the canvas, align the edges. You can immediately see the amount of skew along the bottom edge.
- We cut the place where the edges diverge. The mark must be on both sides of the material.
- Fold in half again, carefully smooth and align the fabric. We combine the edges with the bend, make a cut on it in the same place where there are already marks on the edges. All three cuts should be symmetrical.
- We unfold the fabric back, being careful not to move it out of place. Now it is again folded in two layers. Using a ruler, we connect the marks on the edges with the mark on the bend and draw a line with chalk or a pencil.
- Carefully cut the material with scissors, getting straight edges.
In this simple way you can trim both edges of the canvas.
If the curtain is not the right length for your window, set aside the required length on the canvas and draw a solid line. Fold the excess piece along the line and align the edges on both sides. If the edges match each other, you can cut the tulle.
