When we first enter a room, we do not immediately notice this object. However, it is impossible to imagine decorating a room without it. We are talking about a curtain rod. This interior detail does not just hold heavy drapes, curtains or light kitchen curtains - it truly decorates the window, although it does so completely unnoticeably.

Story
Windows were closed from the sun and prying eyes in ancient times - before glass appeared. Then the opening in the wall was covered with a simple rag, which was attached to wooden poles. A little later, with the development of metalworking, people began to hang curtains on forged metal rods.
Until the 17th century, windows in houses were made very small, and therefore some exquisite curtains did not exist until that time. Everything changed when styles such as Baroque and Rococo entered European interior fashion. Then the window openings became quite impressive in size. Scientists believe that at this time heavy cornices appeared that held equally weighty curtains.

Peculiarities
Essentially, a curtain rod is a long bar on which curtains are hung. However, modern options can be quite original and can literally transform a room.
Among the main elements of the cornice we note:
Hangers or brackets. The crossbar itself is attached to these elements. The brackets must be strong; there are at least two of them in the set (for attaching the rod to the sides). If the crossbar is particularly long, for additional fixation on the wall, the cornice is equipped with another bracket in the middle.
The base on which curtains are hung (aka crossbar). This is the largest part and can look like a string, profiles or rod.
Florons. Not all cornices are equipped with these small elements. They are tips that are placed on the edges of the crossbar-bar.

Kinds
If previously curtains were attached to crossbars made of metal or wood, today plastic is also used for similar purposes. Also, all cornices can be divided into ceiling and wall. In addition, there are differences in design features. The most common options are:
Round. It is a model with one or two rods of different diameters, located parallel to each other. There are always ends on such a curtain rod, and they are used for almost any type of curtains.
String. A more elegant model, where instead of a crossbar there is a thin string (often metal). This option is suitable for light curtains and tulle.
Tire. This option is a peculiar (usually plastic) design with hollows into which hooks are inserted for fixing curtains. This model is attached to the ceiling.
Baguette. A very interesting option, where in addition to the standard crossbar there is a special decorative strip. It seems to cover the entire structural part. The baguette strip is a real decoration of the interior, therefore such a cornice is always chosen based on the design of the room.
Profile. This option looks like a tire one, but it is more flexible, and therefore a profile cornice is used where unusual curved shapes are needed (for example, if the window opening is semicircular).
Telescopic. This model can be folded and unfolded. This cornice is convenient because it does not need to be cut down to fit the window size. It is enough just to fold several parts of the crossbar.
Turning. These curtain rods are usually sold two in one set. Each of them is designed for a separate window sash and is fixed only with the outer edge in the opening.
How to choose a curtain rodHow to choose a cornice for the kitchen, living room, bedroom. Each room requires a separate approach when decorating. Especially if they are conceived in different styles and tones.Read more
