Curtains in the room serve not only as decoration, but also protect from sunlight if it is not needed.
When hearing the word “curtains,” many people immediately have associations with massiveness and heavy fabrics. However, lighter fabrics can also be used - cotton, linen, viscose, etc.
The method of hemming will depend on the quality of the material. Below we will consider the features of each method in more detail.
How and with what to hem?
Curtains are hemmed in order to give the product a completed, aesthetically attractive look, as well as to adjust the length. Before choosing a hemming method, you need to decate the fabric, in other words, carry out a heat-moist treatment. This is necessary in order to avoid various surprises after washing, because all fabrics shrink, to a greater or lesser extent.
To do this, place the material in warm water for a few minutes, then gently squeeze and hang. There is no need to wait until it is completely dry. Iron the fabric slightly damp.
Attention! This treatment is not suitable for velvet, velor, plush, natural silks. It is enough to iron them lightly using an ironing iron.
How can you hem curtains if you decide to do it yourself? You should always first consider whether you have a sewing machine at home or not. If it is missing, then there are several ways to hem curtains without a machine.
You can easily hem them by hand using a hidden seam, the main thing is to match the threads. Then the finished product will look attractive and no worse than the finished factory version. This method is simple, but requires a little skill and patience.
With a machine everything is much easier and faster. The curtains are hemmed with a regular straight stitch. And in all cases of processing, you need to remember that the hem should be double for light fabrics and single for dense ones.
The width of the hem can be from 8 to 15 cm, sometimes more. This is necessary so that the curtains do not form waves when suspended. If the material is light, then additional weights are placed inside.
Additional hemming methods
Above are examples of the most common hemming methods. However, bias tape can also be used for these purposes. Although such curtains are rare, in some cases they can be the best option.
Bias tape is sold in stores, but you can make it yourself. The main thing is that the trim matches beautifully with the fabric of the curtains. First, the fabric is measured in length and the excess is cut off. The edging trim is folded in half, the edges of the curtain are placed inside, secured with pins and stitched.
How to shorten without cutting?
Another way to hem curtains without a machine and without cutting them is to use a special adhesive material, spider web. This method is not suitable for those fabrics that are not recommended for ironing at high temperatures. You can buy cobwebs in the form of a canvas or in the form of a ribbon. The latter is more convenient, since the canvas will have to be cut into strips.
Stages of work when using adhesive tape:
- the fabric is tucked to the required distance;
- the seam must be carefully ironed;
- after that, lay a tape between the two layers;
- fix each section, pausing a little in place and slightly pressing the iron against the fabric.
Attention! If you use dense, heavy material for curtains, then for stronger gluing you need to use two rows of web running parallel to each other.
Housewives do not always approve of this method, since after washing the seam may come apart. Much depends on the quality of the web tape.
The housewife decides how to hem the curtains when the fabric has already been purchased. You can mentally compare one or another processing effect with the interior or other specific features of the room. On light-colored fabrics, housewives do not always like stitched seams; then they either glue them or sew them by hand. It is important to achieve one thing - completeness, accuracy and attractiveness. And you can choose any method for this!
