DIY tablecloth made from shreds

DIY tablecloth made from shredsPatchwork tablecloth – an original thing, and at the same time universal. It fits perfectly into a modern interior, drawing attention to a festively set table. The model, made of bright contrasting fabrics, organically complements the decor of a country-style room.

In an interior decorated in Provence style, a tablecloth made of patches of calm pastel colors looks harmonious. A product with frivolous floral motifs will decorate a small tea table in a country house. Even a novice needlewoman can sew a beautiful designer item and enjoy the creative process.

How to sew a tablecloth from scraps with your own hands

  1. Let's determine the dimensions of the product. To do this, measure the length and width of the table surface. Let's add 25–30 cm on all sides to get even overhangs along the edges. For example, for a table 60X80 cm, the size of a tablecloth with 25 cm overhangs will be: width 60+25X2= 110 cm, length 80+25X2=130 cm. If hemming is performed, add 5 cm on each side. For edging, an allowance of 1 cm is sufficient.
  2. Let's draw a sketch of the future product, determine the number and sizes of blocks. Let's make stencils from cardboard. Beginning craftswomen can use ready-made templates made of transparent plastic, which are sold in specialized stores.

FOR REFERENCE: Templates made from plastic are better than cardboard ones. They last longer and do not lose their geometry around the edges. Such templates can be made independently from thick folders-files. It is useful to have two blanks for each part - with and without seam allowance.

  1. Tablecloth on the table made of scraps
    We cut the fabric pieces with a seam allowance of 0.75 cm and carefully place them in piles. We select fabrics in the same color scheme, this will make it easier to combine them into ready-made blocks. Before starting assembly, we will arrange the parts in accordance with our plan. If you don’t like a certain color combination, select another piece, achieving harmony. We use contrasting fabrics if the intended design requires it.
  2. We sew the parts into blocks, precisely maintaining the width of the allowances. Carefully iron the seams. We assemble the main part from ready-made blocks.We cut out the lining measuring 110x130 cm. We pin together the patchwork composition and the lining, folding it with the wrong sides, and quilt along the edges of the blocks by hand or on a machine.

IMPORTANT! When sewing, observe the following rules:

  • We do not iron the seams, but press them with an iron;
  • press the seams onto the darker fabric;
  • To avoid the formation of “thick” areas with a large number of layers of fabric, we alternate the sides on which the seam is pressed;
  • we observe the seam allowances exactly, otherwise it will be difficult to combine the blocks;
  • We use a special patchwork foot, if your sewing machine comes with it.
  1. We do the edging. For a 1.5 cm edge, we will prepare strips 6 cm wide. We connect them together: we apply them at right angles face to face, and sew them diagonally. We cut off the excess fabric along the seam, leaving 0.75-1 cm, and iron it. We fold the strip lengthwise with the wrong side inward and iron it well. We place the strip on the tablecloth, aligning the open cut of the edging with the edge of the product, and attach it. At the corners we interrupt the stitching, not reaching the edge by the width of the allowance. We first turn the edging up, and then bend it down. We combine the cuts and sew in this way along the entire perimeter. Iron the seams and turn the edging strip inside out. We attach it, carefully shaping the corners of the product.

Useful tips on how to sew a tablecloth from scraps

You can quickly sew a patchwork tablecloth by arranging large pieces in the form of rectangles, squares and stripes. In this case, it is important to successfully select the flaps by color. We unite the entire product with a wide border of the same color and hem it with an “envelope”, like a regular tablecloth.

Tablecloth made of scrapsVarious-sized scraps left over from previous sewing can be assembled into a fun little thing in the “crazy patchwork” style.. We lay out pieces of fabric on an adhesive backing cut to the required size. As soon as the composition looks harmonious, pin the flaps with pins and iron them to the non-woven fabric. We sew with a decorative or zigzag stitch along the edges of the parts. We connect it with the lining fabric and edge it.

A stylish tablecloth is obtained if a plain cut, which is not large enough for the table, is supplemented with a wide patchwork border. The model with a border of lace embroidered or knitted napkins looks distinctive.
