The 90s in Russia is a landmark era that reborn the consciousness of many. If now, for example, there is a choice, then in those troubled times they dressed in “what they managed to grab.” It was believed that the brighter and more colorful, the cooler it is. Young people tried to find more or less branded items, although the concept of what a “company” actually should be was vague.
How did women dress in the 90s?
Women dressed in what was in their closet: a neat straight skirt with a vent at the back, a Soviet-made shirtdress, a double-breasted jacket with lurex splashes - all these things were present in the wardrobe of almost every lady at the beginning of the troubled decade. And by the end of this time women could understand the difference between fashionable, stylish and consumer goods. When the flow of Chinese junk poured into the country, it was considered cool to wear anything acidic or painted with all kinds of prints.
The girls got out of it in their own way. One dress for several “persons” or one jeans, blouse, blouse is a common thing. The girls changed clothes and felt “as if they were wearing new clothes”. Of course, there were also wealthy young ladies who could afford to dress fashionably. Often such people were disliked in class, in groups, at work. They were jealous.
The coolest thing was considered to be a leather or denim item, bright sneakers. But closer to the 2000s, fashion began to take on less violent features. There are things made from quality materials. Trouser or skirt suits, leather shoes, and clothes that fit well have become popular.
The era of “turmoil” can be described as cash-strapped and hopeless in terms of the future. It seemed that there would be no end to this filth and hunger, so everything bright was valued, even light.
Many “trends” migrated from TV to the streets. For example, after the premiere of the film "Titanic" Every second girl in her closet could find a top with the image of the main characters of the film. After watching the tape "Gorgeous" Over the knee boots have become widely popular, "Terminator" brought glasses a la Ray-Ban and a leather jacket, "Matrix" - leather pants, "The basic Instinct"- white mini dress with a throat. The TV series "Beverly Hills», «Melrose Place», «Helen and the guys" and many others.
Sportswear has become widespread due to its bright colors, often “patchwork”, which means colorful texture and “indestructibility”. Romanian, Chinese, Polish costumes worn not only in everyday life, but also “on the go.” For example, towards the end of the 90s, the popular “outfit” was jeans, a trowel and any available shoes from sneakers to boots. The tracksuits were made of smooth raincoat fabric, then replaced with crinkled strong fabric.
Denim clothing was considered a hit, wore jeans of any color, style, quality. Women's “malvinas” gained popularity around the end of the 80s, and “pyramids” and “bananas” were worn for a very long time even after the 2000s.
The market was flooded at one time denim wide leg shorts like overalls with detachable straps, cotton jackets a variety of styles from classic men's to fitted with elastic or cropped. Miniskirt (elastic) or straight denim with a vent at the back was present in the wardrobe of almost every young lady. By the way, it was fashionable to wear a skirt with bright thick tights (for example, “long stockings”) or leggings (plain or colorful).
Thick cotton trousers also called jeans. They wore black, green, orange, burgundy, brown. The model was “indestructible”, only it stretched quickly at the knees.
At the disco they dressed in a short skirt and a waist-length top. In winter, the latter was replaced with a sweater of the same length, for example, made from artificial fur-grass.
Accessories, jewelry, shoes
Leather boots are the ultimate dream of many, but many had to be content with leatherette shoes. Only in the late 90s, high-quality shoes became available to all segments of the population. Bright high-top sneakers with slogans have been worn with any outfit since the early 90s.
The thick tractor platform came into fashion around the middle of the decade.. Back then, sneakers with chunky soles, rough loafers with slightly flared thick heels, a huge wedge heel and a square toe were considered cool. Older women wore pumps with tapering triangle heels from the Soviet wardrobe. Rubber soap boxes, mules, and, by the end of the 20th century, pointed-toe shoes appeared.
Were in fashion leatherette backpacks (from small to large), suitcase bags with gold-tone fittings, square “messenger bags” and tiny shoulder wallets, reticules, U-shaped handbags, belt bananas. At one time, a red or black bag made from pieces of leather was considered especially chic. Cardboard (from shopping) or even plastic bright bags fit well into the fashionable female image.
Glasses worn:
- oval, round, triangular, hexagonal in a metal frame;
- plastic a la Rey-ban;
- without frame completely made of plastic/glass (only metal arms);
- The lenses are bright - yellow, red, orange.
Interesting! It was fashionable not only to wear glasses during the day, but also to dance in a club or just at a disco.
Metal chains as thick as a finger, wooden pendants, various gold and silver accessories, chokers, unusual earrings appreciated among young people. They were considered no less fashionable huge velvet hair elastic bands and small acid-colored ones, hairpins of various designs, hoops and headbands. Even elderly ladies had a price for plastic jewelry. The favorites were, of course, real gold jewelry.
The era of the 90s cannot be called fashionable. Modern “1990s style” photographic images will never be able to fully recreate those images. Everything has become emphatically detailed, expensive, and polished.. And at the end of the 20th century, little preference was given to little things; relationships between people were more valued. But these, of course, are only observations, not the truth.
Yes, fashion in the 90s was very interesting! No one even knew that you needed to dress in branded clothes bought in second-hand stores! The best fashion was back then, before the 2000s! Look now - there are no elegantly dressed girls or women! A must for any age is a backpack, short pants with bare ankles, wide jackets with huge scarves! But in general, every decade has its own fashion and it’s not funny!
I remember carrying tracksuits, always a size larger). Well, everything is the same as now, only better quality.
These are just people from the 90s, ordinary photos... At that time there were a lot of stylish, interestingly dressed people. They are not in the photo.
