Patchwork is back in fashion, revived after the 80s and 90s, which again shine on all international catwalks. What kind of trend is this, what to wear it with, what famous designers can offer - this is exactly what I will talk about today.
What is patchwork?
Patchwork is a patchwork technique in which an outfit is literally assembled from scraps of different fabrics. At the same time, materials can - and should - vary in structure, color, print, texture, and so on. The seams between them are made deliberately rough and noticeable, like patches.
The trend first emerged in the 60s of the last century. A collection of patchwork clothing was released by Yves Saint Laurent, inspired by the works of the famous Dutch artist Peter Mondrian. Such things were popular in the 80s, after which they temporarily disappeared from the catwalks. And in 2020 they were revived again, becoming an integral attribute of streetstyle.

The main materials of 2020 are denim and leather, so patchwork has not bypassed them.Fashion shows often feature jeans and leather skirts made from scraps of different fabrics.
Other designers thought about the colder season and rolled out patchwork coats onto the catwalks. It looks stylish, elegant and at the same time very unusual.
Fashionable items in patchwork style
If you review new collections from popular designers, you will notice how the patchwork technique is gradually taking over the world. Thus, Koche showed fashionable leather pants made from gray, white and black stripes of fabric. They suggest combining their trend with a sweater with open sleeves and deliberately rough boots.

Roksanda did not stand aside and demonstrated a delicate maxi dress made of natural silk. It uses a dozen muted shades. The outfit itself turned out to be in autumn colors. There is no shame in wearing this to any evening event.

Tom Ford demonstrated the currently fashionable midi-length denim skirt. It is made of blue and dark blue denim, and with completely unsymmetrical stripes. The bottom is decorated with a slightly romantic frill.

Maison Margiela went further and showed off their version of a layered wool coat. It is made from several fabrics: from delicate pastel beige wool to classic gray-green check. It seems that the layering trend will be conquering the catwalks again in the near future.
Alexander McQueen made their own warm wool suit. Despite its classic shape, it cannot be called standard. The jacket and trousers are made from scraps of fabric with different patterns. Even a cat got lost there.

Tod's also decided to get into the fall coat business, releasing a leather version made from fabric scraps. The colors of the patches are almost identical, but together they create an unusual pattern reminiscent of golden autumn foliage.
Versace was not spared the trend either. Their new collection features a skirt made of vertical multi-colored strips of leather. All shades are muted, the dominant color is brown. In general, a typical autumn outfit for those who don’t like bright colors.

What to wear with
There can be a huge variety of options for images with patchwork. The trend can be incorporated into both a romantic and a deliberately rough outfit. The most important thing is not to combine two patchwork outfits with different patterns with each other.
Try not to overload the image. The patchwork leather skirt is already eye-catching. Luxurious sandals and a mohair jacket embroidered with bright beads will not go well with her. Try to maintain a balance, otherwise you won't look too stylish.
Patchwork is one of the most interesting trends this year. What do you think? Already stocked up on patchwork outfits? Tell us about it in the comments!
