When you hear the word “dandy,” many people conjure up the image of a handsome man, dressed with impeccable taste and possessing equally impeccable manners. However, a clothing style with this name is not only the prerogative of men. The female images in it look especially elegant and stylish and, despite their external simplicity and deliberate inconspicuousness, attract attention and make an impression.
A little history
It should be immediately noted that dandy is not only a clothing style that implies a combination of elegant simplicity and aristocratic chic, but also a real philosophy. The latter is based on the principle of minimalism.
Reference. The three tenets of dandyism (a philosophy whose founding father was George Brummel, the 19th-century English socialite) were: “Be surprised at nothing. Be dispassionate, surprise. Leave as soon as you’ve made an impression.”
The aesthetics of minimalism was relevant for all aspects of the life of someone who considered himself a dandy - behavior, statements and appearance.Clothing in this style had to comply with the principles of “conspicuous inconspicuousness” and “thoughtful casualness.” To be considered well dressed, one had to wear something that was inconspicuous but still looked elegant.
This style began to “penetrate” into the women’s wardrobe along with masculine elements of the image. This happened at the beginning of the 20th century. The emergence of a new trend - women wearing men's suits and trousers - was facilitated by Mademoiselle Coco. She first appeared in public wearing jockey trousers and immediately demonstrated to the already shocked ladies how comfortable and enjoyable horse riding was in such clothes. Later, Chanel introduced into fashion vests, jackets and shirts with a characteristic masculine cut, but created taking into account the characteristics of the female figure.
Men's wardrobe items were later worn by Marlene Dietrich and other emancipated women of that time. Their example showed that a dandy-style look (impeccably cut jackets and trousers) looks surprisingly feminine and sexy, and a sophisticated and elegant presentation makes an unforgettable impression.
Dandy style concept
Like any other style, dandy clothing for women requires adherence to certain rules. This is not only the use of clothing of a characteristic color and cut, but also adherence to the principles of its combination, as well as the correct presentation of the image. Main features of the style:
- simplicity and elegance of cut;
- impeccable appearance - wardrobe items should fit your figure like a glove;
- use of high quality fabrics;
- the predominance of tones of the basic and muted palette (dark or light) - ash gray, sand, beige, brown, white, black, olive, purple;
- lack of bright, catchy accessories, costume jewelry, i.e.adherence to the principle of minimalism - you can use typically masculine elements of the image, which include a tie, belt, cufflinks, watch, neckerchief, scarf, hat;
- the presence of one thoughtfully careless, but noticeable detail - a headdress put on one side, a tie slightly untied, etc.
How to Create a Dandy Look for Women
Today, the dandy style, used from time to time by fashion designers to create their collections, has changed a little. This was facilitated by the tendency to mix fashion trends. In addition to men's wardrobe items, you can now use tailored skirts and sundresses made from suiting fabric to create an image.
However, the main elements of the style are still trousers with arrows, tuxedos and tailcoats. Often the outfit is complemented by a vest. A shirt or blouse can be of a simple classic style or with a stand-up collar.
Reference. It is worth understanding that creating a dandy-style look does not mean using men's jackets and trousers. Since the light hand of Mademoiselle Coco, many items of clothing from the stronger half of humanity have migrated into the women's wardrobe, designers have been creating things of a characteristic “masculine” style for girls and ladies so that they fit them like a brand and emphasize their femininity.
Coats and jackets for the female dandy look should have an emphasis on the waist. This effect can be achieved not only by choosing fitted or high-waisted models, but also by using a wide belt or belt.
As already mentioned, accessories should be predominantly from a man's arsenal - the main one, of course, is a tie. If a skirt is used in a dandy look, then it is better to prefer the “pencil” style. In an image with a jacket, white shirt, vest and tie, such a model will be quite appropriate and will not violate the integrity of the outfit.
Shoe models should preferably be men's. Oxfords or loafers are ideal. It is allowed to wear pumps.
When creating a dandy-style look, remember: just putting on a jacket and trousers and looking irresistible will not work. To try on such an image for yourself requires a certain courage and the right presentation. Straightened shoulders, a distantly polite expression, a direct gaze - you need to literally radiate confidence! In addition, perfection in every detail is important. However, those who decide to use the dandy style in their outfits will undoubtedly attract attention with the unusualness and sophisticated elegance of their images.
