It is not uncommon for luggage to be lost upon arrival in another country or city. No one is immune from this. If such a situation arises, there is no need to panic. And we should get together and solve the difficulties that have arisen.

If upon arrival, after a long search on the tape, you still cannot find your suitcase, you should take the following actions:

  • Contact the staff at the counter marked Lost&Found. This can be done easily in the baggage claim area. If the airport does not have such a counter, then you should contact the airline staff and report that your things have been lost;
  • After contacting the airline or the counter, the passenger must write a statement. Where is it indicated whose luggage was lost and what was in the bag. In most cases, a person is given a special form that must be filled out and given to the airport employee;
  • After the application has been submitted, all that remains is to wait for the airline’s response. Typically lost bags are found and delivered to the owner within 1-2 days.

Important! The airline that carried out check-in is responsible for all baggage of passengers on the airliner, so all claims must be made against it.

Is compensation possible and in what amount?

To receive compensation, you must submit a written application to the airline you used. The claim is valid for 2 years from the date of registration of the loss. The amount of compensation will depend on what convection the airline’s country is in:

  • According to the established rules of the Warsaw Agreement. The compensation amount is $17 per 1 kg of luggage. If the bag was not weighed, then a fixed compensation of $35 is issued. Russian airlines operate only under such a convention;
  • According to the established rules of the Montreal Convention, the maximum amount of payment for one baggage is 1300 euros.

Important! If you think that you should be given more compensation for your luggage, you must go to court and present evidence of the value of the cargo.

Some useful tips

luggage at the airport
To avoid this situation when flying, follow these tips:

  • When choosing a suitcase, choose bright, unusual models. This bag will be easier to find among all your luggage. If you have already purchased a plain, simple suitcase, you can add a colorful ribbon, sticker or lock;
  • When forging items, remove all tags from them. Otherwise, the scanner may detect a suspicious item, and then you will not see your things for a long time;
  • To avoid losing your luggage, attach a name tag with contacts to it or put a note inside;
  • Arrive at check-in on time so that all passengers' bags arrive on board at the same time;
  • Make sure that the airline employee firmly attaches a tag with the flight number to your luggage (you should be given a copy of it);
  • When transporting valuables, do not forget to take out insurance for them.

If you couldn’t avoid losing your luggage, don’t panic. Keep calm. This situation can happen to anyone. Therefore, you need to pull yourself together and go to the Lost & Found counter. Perhaps your suitcase is at the airport, it just hasn’t been put on the belt yet. If it still hasn’t been delivered, then write a statement and wait for your things. They will definitely be returned to the owner.
