Suitcase sizes

Suitcase sizesThere are so many interesting places in the world that you want to visit. When planning a trip, each of us faces the task of transporting clothes, shoes, and souvenirs. Which suitcase to choose to fit everything is a problem, but it can be solved. First, let's get acquainted with the size range.

Suitcases on wheels - dimensions and volume

These products are divided into three groups by size: small, medium and large. Suitcase sizes: S, M and L. The determining criterion is the height of the product, which is indicated in centimeters and its internal volume in liters. Foreign manufacturers indicate height in inches.

Suitcase sizes

Suitcase size S (cabin size)

This is the smallest size. Height from 40 to 55 cm and volume up to 40 liters will allow you to take things for a short business trip of one person. Such a plastic suitcase is popularly called “knee-length”, and manufacturers produce it as a cabin size. A big advantage is the possibility of carrying it as hand luggage, i.e. you can not check it in as luggage, but take it with you into the cabin.

Important! Before your flight, find out on the airline’s website what dimensions and weight of hand luggage are allowed for flights with this carrier.

Suitcase size in centimeters

Most airlines define the maximum allowable dimensions as 40 x 55 x 20. This means that the sum of all measurements should not exceed 115 cm. And do not forget about the weight of the luggage, this criterion is also determined by the carrier.

Foreign manufacturers indicate height in inches. Small S size suitcases are available in 16, 18, 20 inches. In our usual measurements, this will be 45, 51 and 54 cm. The most convenient size is 20 inches - 54 cm x 40 cm x 22 cm.

Suitcase size M

The height of the manufactured products in this group ranges from 56 to 70 cm (25–27 inches). The volume will not exceed 80 liters. This size is the most common and most practical among its counterparts. It is chosen when there is a trip for a couple of weeks. It can easily accommodate several sets of clothes and shoes. There will still be room here for those purchases that you will make during the trip, of course, if your goal is tourism and not shopping with a complete change of wardrobe.

Important! For a family trip, it is better to take care of purchasing two suitcases of this size. Then all your things will fit without difficulty, quickly finding what you need will become easier, and there will be no problems with overloading.

Suitcase size L

These models include products whose height exceeds 70 cm, or 28 inches. Its volume (from 100 liters) can easily be filled with things for a two-week vacation for a married couple, if you approach this wisely (for example, do not take 5 evening dresses and 3 sweaters with you to hot countries - suddenly it will be cold, but there is nothing to go out with). A large suitcase filled to capacity is inconvenient to move even on wheels. Air carriers will not take on board luggage whose total dimensions exceed 158 cm.

It may be worth purchasing two medium-sized suitcases - then all your things will certainly fit, and the owner will maintain order in the bag. In size L, items with dimensions exceeding the sum of the sides of 158 cm can be presented. Such luggage will not be taken on a plane; it is also inconvenient to carry on a train; you are left with a car or a sea liner.

Suitcase sizes

Before buying a suitcase, decide on the following questions:

  • purpose and duration of the trip;
  • kind of transport;
  • approximate number of things needed;
  • Need a bag for one, two people or more.

Answers to them are needed so that, using the advice of experts, you can make the best choice.

  • If you have short-term business trips coming up, and you travel (fly) light - a change of underwear, a sanitary kit and a couple of shirts, then it is enough to purchase a small suitcase that will be easy to move with. For tourism and recreation, choose larger models so that you can easily fit the things you need for your trip.
  • Fans of air transport should remember that some types of luggage may be considered carry-on luggage. The carrier does not favor large suitcases - if the sum of the dimensions exceeds the established value, then they will not take it on board.
  • Think about what things you need to take with you and in what quantity. For example, you are going to fly to Thailand, you will take with you several pairs of shorts, T-shirts, swimsuits, a change of underwear, a cosmetic bag, a first aid kit, a book, and two pairs of shoes. You don't need warm clothes there; the hotel will provide towels and a robe. This means that not the smallest volume will do, but not the largest one either. Take a model from size M.
  • If a family of two or three people is going on a trip, the question of purchasing a large suitcase already arises.And in this case, it is also important to decide on the number of things - whether the volume will accommodate everything that is required, or is it better to divide the luggage into two pieces.

Conclusion

Armed with knowledge of all sizes, you can easily decide on the purchase of a suitcase of the right size. Just don’t forget that half of the outfits you took on vacation will remain in your bag or will only be worn for “walking”. Approach this issue more rationally, and you will get rid of many problems with luggage.

A Anna:

Explain, please, who and how converted inches into centimeters?
“The most convenient size is considered to be 20 inches - 54 cm x 40 cm x 22 cm.”
1 inch = 2.54 cm. 53.5 cm is 21 inches, and 20 is 51 cm!
