Are you tired of paying for packages every time you visit the store? Perhaps you began to save money and do not take a new one every time, but wait until the bag from your purse breaks. But then you buy the next one again, which in a couple of days will also go to the trash.
Or maybe we shouldn’t add plastic waste, which is choking the planet? It's time to remember the string bag that was used by our grandmothers. Today this is the best option.
Especially if you make it yourself. And take an unnecessary T-shirt as a basis, while at the same time freeing up space in the closet.
Turning a T-shirt into a string bag
Find half an hour of free time, this will be enough for useful rework.
You will need a little to get the job done.
- T-shirt.
- Sewing machine.
- Scissors.
Operating procedure
- We start from the top of the product. We cut the sleeves and deepen the neckline.
ADVICE. A string bag can also be made from a sleeveless T-shirt or tank top. In this case, the top of the knitted product can be left unchanged.
- Let's move on to the bottom of the shirt. To give a characteristic string bag shape make the bottom semicircular. We cut off the excess.
- We cut together the cut so that it, together with the sides, forms a continuous line.
- All that remains is to turn the solid knitted fabric into a mesh fabric, like wicker or knitted string bags. For this make cuts.
- Having retreated 3–4 cm from the bottom of the bag, we mentally draw a horizontal straight line. At a distance of 3 cm from the edge, we make a cut 3 cm long. We make the next one 2–3 cm from the first. We continue this along the entire width of the bag, not reaching its edge by 3 cm.
- We draw the next straight line, retreating in height from the first 3 cm.
IMPORTANT! We make the cuts in a checkerboard pattern.
- In this way we make cuts along the bottom of the knitwear.
- Slits must be made on each side of the bag (front and back of the T-shirt).
All! The string bag is ready!
ADVICE! You can cut the fabric along both horizontal and vertical lines.
String bag with variations
- If you don't like your purchases being visible, make a tote bag without slits.
- There is no need to make curves along the bottom of the product. However, if you are working with an oversized tank, consider the elasticity of the material. Do not stitch the front and back at the very bottom of a long T-shirt: under the weight of goods it will stretch even more.
- The bag can be decorated with fringe. To do this, sew a line at a distance of 10–15 cm from the bottom. Make vertical cuts not reaching 1.5–2 cm from the connecting seam. The distance between the cuts is from 2 to 2.5 cm. And then tie the strips in pairs.
