Backpack production

A backpack is a universal means of moving cargo. Due to its spaciousness and the ability to carry heavy things without much strain on the back, due to the even distribution of weight on both shoulders, it has become widespread. However, it is not always used exactly where it is necessary to carry heavy loads (hiking, for example); they are also actively used in everyday life.

Reference! Do not confuse a backpack and a satchel. Despite the similar structure, the backpack has a solid body and an orthopedic back.

Backpack productionThere are currently about nine species, and their number continues to grow:

  • Expeditionary. Large backpacks for carrying heavy loads over long distances in harsh weather conditions. They have the ability to adjust the length of the back and have lining on the shoulders and back made of soft, breathable materials.
  • Assault. A smaller and lighter copy of the expedition one. Used when climbing to peaks.
  • Walking. Designed for excursions or short hikes. They have a simplified design: the back length is not adjustable, small volume and thin pads on the shoulders and back.
  • Urban. They differ from other species in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most often used as an accessory.
  • Baul. A spacious bag made of durable material is used to carry a large amount of things.

Special sports:

  • Ski. Used by skiers and snowboarders when descending from the mountains. Equipped with pockets for avalanche equipment and a durable casing that protects things in the event of a fall.
  • For alloys. It differs from other types in that it is made of waterproof materials.
  • Bicycle. They have protection from moisture in case of exposure to rain and reflective tapes to identify the cyclist in the dark.

When did the first backpack production appear?

The first backpack appeared over five thousand years ago. It was found by tourists in 1991 in the Alps. It was a small bag made of leather, stretched over a frame of woven branches.

Reference! It is difficult to determine the exact place where backpacks were invented, because at different times, in different parts of the country, similar structures were invented for carrying loads on the back. That is why it is believed that they have several places of invention.

However, military duffel bags and army satchels are considered to be the prototype of the modern backpack. Their mass production began at the end of the 18th century.. These were durable, lightweight and waterproof bags made of rough leather, for infantrymen to carry the most necessary things during campaigns.

Together with the military, tourists and athletes appreciated the convenience of backpacks. From the beginning of the twentieth century, they began to actively use duffel bags, and in the early 30s of the twentieth century, the first mass production of backpacks for tourism and sports, popularly called “koloboks,” was launched in the USSR. In the 60s, a model developed by the Abalakov brothers went into production.

For the 1980 Olympics, a model by Arkady Yarov was released, which had a design similar to modern products. After this, manufacturers began to experiment with materials, designs and models. Because of this, their division into tourist, sports, urban, etc. began.
