Bags made from distressed denim have not been something unusual for a long time. On the contrary, many girls enjoy using such an accessory in everyday life.
What types of bags can be made from old jeans?
Denim is used to make spacious travel bags, practical backpacks for daily use, shopping bags for shopping, stylish clutches and miniature bags for keys and phones. Similar models are often found in the collections of famous designers.
Bag backpack
Backpacks made from old jeans amaze with their variety. These include simple models, hastily cut from one trouser leg with an attached strap, and complex designs with an abundance of pockets, compartments, inserted orthopedic backs and ergonomic straps. Of course, the manufacture of the latter requires certain knowledge and skills. But to sew a simple backpack, all you need is desire and old jeans. All that is needed:
- cut off the trouser leg;
- stitch along the bottom edge;
- tuck and hem the top edge to avoid thread shedding;
- sew a braid under the lace at the top of the backpack;
- attach the handles - straps and thread the lace.
Large shopping bag
A bag for going to the grocery store will be an alternative to numerous bags.
This is a great step to show your individuality and at the same time make a feasible contribution to the fight against littering the planet with plastic bags.
For this model, handles of a ring or half-ring made of plastic and wood in tandem with a wide strap are ideal. Thanks to this solution, it can be carried in your hand or thrown over your shoulder.
The design can be very diverse, from two stitched rectangles to non-trivial ellipses with a stitched bottom and sides.
Miniature clutch
Despite their miniature size, these are the bags that require jewelry craftsmanship. After all, it is in them that it is necessary to combine all the details with special precision and lay perfectly even seams. Such bags necessarily require a pattern and precise calculations. They often contain frame inserts or parts are duplicated with high-quality adhesive material.
Don't despair if you don't have enough experience. Bags made from jeans require much less skill than tailoring, because there is no need for additional adjustments, stitching and fit. A good pattern, patience and meticulous execution and very soon you will become the owner of the treasured clutch.
How to sew a bag from old jeans - what you need for this
In order to stay on trend, it is not at all necessary to go to the nearest boutique for your next purchase; you can sew such a bag with your own hands from a pair of used jeans.
Handmade products have firmly entered our lives and compete well with factory models, not inferior to them either in design or quality. But before you start sewing, You need to remember a few simple rules, the implementation of which guarantees 100% results.
High quality seams. Even if you sew by hand, each of them must be ironed through a damp cotton cloth.
It’s quite possible to do without a sewing machine, but not without an iron.
The presence of a duplicate layer. Of course, whether or not to duplicate the details of a future product is a personal matter for each craftswoman; it all depends on personal preferences and the author’s idea. But it is better to give additional rigidity to the future bag at the initial stage in advance than to look disappointed at the results of your work at the end of the sewing process.
Both flezelin and dublerin can be used as a stabilizing layer. These materials work well. They are quite easy to glue; you just need to combine the denim parts of the bag with blanks made of duplicating material and iron them with a hot iron.
Availability of paper pattern. Most novice craftswomen strive to quickly enjoy the results of their work, and are happy to skip many steps in the sewing process, and only after experiencing the grief of disappointment, they come to the conclusion that there are no extra steps. Therefore, before you start sewing your first bag, you need to know exactly what you want to get in the end result. The sketch of the future creation should be thought out to the smallest detail and captured on paper, not forgetting about the fittings and all kinds of decorative elements.
The finished pattern can be downloaded on the Internet, reducing or enlarging the details if necessary, or you can draw it yourself, using the knowledge acquired in school drawing lessons.
Before starting work, jeans should be washed, ripped and ironed thoroughly, and only then can you start cutting out the details.
DIY bag from old jeans in half an hour: step-by-step instructions
Sewing a bag “in a hurry” does not require special skills; it is enough to know how to use a needle and thread and a sewing machine. However, you can do without the latter.
The bag consists of two sewn rectangles made of denim. The lower part (bottom) is formed by stitching off the corners. Comfortable handles are made of similar material. To ensure that the inside of the bag is neat and not full of unfinished seams, it is lined with cotton. If desired, you can make a rectangular valve.
Required materials and tools
- Old jeans;
- matching threads;
- fabric for lining;
- needles and pins;
- sewing machine;
- ruler, measuring tape and right-angled triangle;
- scissors;
- Pattern.
Step-by-step instruction
- Open the jeans at the seams and iron thoroughly with steam.
- Apply the details of the future bag onto the denim, not forgetting the seam allowances (front and back halves + handles).
- Cut out 2 main parts of the bag from the lining fabric. The size of the cotton parts must exactly match the size of the denim parts.
- Cut out all the details.
- Duplicate all “denim” details with non-woven fabric.
- Combine the details of the denim bag. Pin with bobby pins along the bottom and side edges. Sweep away.
- Do the same with cotton items, with the only difference being that in the inside of the bag you should leave an area of approximately 10 cm in the side seam unsewn.
- Fold the handle parts (long rectangles) in half. Align the cuts and baste along the long side.
- Machine stitch along all basted areas.
- Turn the handles right side out. To make this operation easier, use this simple advice: Sew the lace to the edge of the handle and attach a pin to it, and then thread it through the “denim tunnel”. Now all that remains is to pull the cord, and the handle will begin to unscrew itself.
- Remove the basting and carefully iron the seams.
- In the bag blanks (both cotton and denim) form a bottom in the lower part. To do this, draw additional lines perpendicular to the line of the bottom seam, as if drawing corners. Please note that the length of the line corresponds to the width of the bottom in the finished product. If you want the bag to have a bottom that is 7 cm wide, then the hypotenuse of the angle should be 7 cm.
- Check the correspondence of the drawn lines; they should represent a mirror image of each other. Sweep away.
- Machine stitch. Remove the basting and press the seams.
- Combine the details of the bag (jeans) with the handles, folding them right sides and pointing down. Chip or sweep. If the design of the bag has a flap, baste it in the same way (with right sides facing each other).
- Insert the inner cotton piece into the resulting structure.
- Sweep the top cut, making sure that the valve and handles are inside.
- Machine stitch.
- Turn the product through the hole in the side seam of the inner part of the bag. And the bag is ready!
