Felt is a felted material made from natural fluff or synthetic fibers, a type of felt.
The scope is very wide, they use:
- for the manufacture of clothing and accessories;
- car interior trim parts;
- mechanical engineering (as filters and seals);
- furniture upholstery;
- production of decorative elements and toys;
- handicrafts.
Felt made from natural wool is soft and pleasant to the touch, but quickly rolls up.
Wool blend is soft and flexible due to viscose, but over time it loses its shape and becomes shaggy. Synthetic is more rigid, but also has higher wear resistance and a larger selection of colors (photo).
Felt has a pleasant appearance, and products made from it look beautiful and stylish. Despite the selection of women's accessories on store shelves, it is always nice to have something made with your own hands. But To sew a product, you should follow some rules.
Pros and cons of felt
The universal material, which has long been used in various directions, is now gaining popularity again.
Pros:
- Does not require edge processing; due to felting, the material does not fray.
- It takes any shape well with ironing and light steaming.
- Double-sided, both sides are the same in texture and color.
- Easy to sew and glue with PVA glue, instant, or a glue gun.
Minuses:
- High price of material;
- Pellets often appear on such material.
Important! To prevent the product from deforming and shrinking, it is either dry cleaned with a soft brush or hand washed at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees C.
Master class on making a felt handbag
A felt bag is easy to make yourself, even for a beginner in this matter. Sewing a small handbag with felt decor will take a couple of hours. The model is suitable for styles: boho, romantic and minimalism.
Necessary materials
For work we will need:
- thick gray felt for the base;
- felt 4 colors for droplets;
- floss threads;
- chalk, tailor's pins;
- sharp scissors;
- leather belt or material for its manufacture;
- lightning;
- narrow lace;
- carabiners and half rings for attaching a belt.
Step-by-step making of a bag
We suggest making an original handbag from felt, photo below:
Stages of work:
We draw a pattern and transfer it to the base material.
Cut out the required number of droplets from colored felt.
We place them on the outer part in a checkerboard pattern. For convenience, we attach with pins.
We sew the drops with a decorative seam by hand using matching threads. From the corner, up, we embroider the strip using a “back needle” stitch.
We close the darts along the bottom, thereby forming the bottom of the bag.
We use a sewing machine to sew in a zipper and sew a felt loop with a metal ring.
For an aesthetic look, we cover the zipper sections with lace.
We connect the side and bottom sections with a decorative hand stitch.
Attach the belt to the sewn-in half rings. The bag is ready.
Reference! The zipper can also be sewn in manually using the same “back needle” stitch.
Original models
Many interesting models of felt bags make it easy to choose an option for yourself or as a gift to your loved ones.
Basket bag
The handbag is shaped like a wicker basket. In such models, the base is often cut out along with the handles. The product tapers downward.
The outside of the bag is decorated with flowers, themed appliqués, or left without decoration to give a discreet look. It can play the role of an accessory or gift wrapping.
Clutches
Clutches made of fleecy felt in discreet shades look elegant. Rectangular or square in shape, decorated with flowers, metal fittings or carved felt patterns.
Pouch
A practical option for a felt bag, as they are very roomy and have a simple lace closure that tightens the top. They are performed laconically, without being burdened with unnecessary decor.
Shoulder bags
Crossbody handbags have not gone out of fashion for many years. They are usually covered with a flap with a button or a magnet and have external pockets. A large load on the belt requires the use of leather or sling. This model, made of felt and decorated with ribbons or rivets, will become a bright detail of the image.
Combined products
Often, a combination of materials is used to create unique things.
Leather elements look great in combination with felt. These could be straps, flaps or decorative details. Metal fittings will help highlight the leather.
Decor
In order to make it yourself the bag looked even more original and was decorated with decorative elements:
- flowers made of felt, leather or ribbons;
- metal fittings (rivets, buttons, carabiners);
- tassels made of thread or leather;
- large applications in the form of berries, flowers or animals.
Reference! Handbags for children are also made from felt; with the help of applique, you can set the theme of the holiday or depict the girl’s favorite characters.
Felt handbags are practical and aesthetically pleasing. They can be used for various purposes, for example, as a fashionable and original accessory, gift wrapping or for storing small items.
